No fireworks on Monday

Well, earthshaking News!

The Vernon City Council “forgot” to hire/retain a qualified, licensed person to set of the fireworks on Canada Day (used to be “Dominion Day” at one time).

Soooooo there will be no official fireworks on Monday. Big woopy dooo!

HJ they figure spraying a few tons of fire retardent around the bone dry vegitation at the Rose Bowl here will make the fireworks display here OK, of course that doesnt count on the hundreds of complete idiots bringing trunks full of fireworks that are far more dangerous than the official displays from firing off enough gunpowder to rival the Battle of Midway just a few streets away. I just hope we come thru this year OK , we’ve had the driest year on record, and some of you saw what happened at Griffith Park earlier this year. I fear thats the state is just going to explode in flames come Fall.

It is going to be a long, dry season. Shall we bet which side of the mountain burns first?

I don’t know if the lightning on Friday started any fires, but the way it was pouring … could have been a fire hose!

Send some to California!

Friday was exciting here in Deer Park, as well. (About 200 or so miles south of HJ…) There were gale force winds with gusts to 45 kts, a lightning strike on the property, and rain falling sideways. I thought I was back in the tropics.

And only 15 mi south of Deer Park in greater Spokane we got a nice breeze and a light rain.

Warren,

We’ll remind you next time you grumble abou how dry it is!

Currently, where in Spokane I live we can STILL use a good rain… I think the best rain we’ve has so far this past month was about 3:30am Monday morning.

Just exactly what qualifications are required to light the blue touch paper? How do you get a licence? Do you pass the test if you manage to light 2 out of 3 blue touch papers? Or is the test tougher than that? Inquiring minds want to know.

Kevin,

I have no idea what the qualifications need to be, I don’t play with fireworks. And since I don’t usually watch the stuff, I wouldn’t have noticed if it hadn’t been in the paper.
To me it was just one more indication how “smart” our politicos are. They get trained at the local level and from there rise to their level of incompetence.

Maybe there should be a license test for politicos. There could be general knowledge questions, like "What is the difference between a suicide bomber and a single mother?" And then there would be tests of manual dexterity: "Let's see how fast you can cut a ribbon." Just set the pass mark at 20% and we'd all be a lot better off.

Pyrotechnics requires schooling at a certified school. As best as I can say is that the course is similar to that a demolitions expert has to take and the certification is generally at the state level. It’s a lot more complicated than it looks. It’s not like setting off firecrackers like you can buy at a road side stand. A pyrotechnician has to actually build the launch charge and needs to know how much charge for each type of firework and how high it will go and how long the delay is and what affects wind will have on the explosive after launch. He needs to know safety precautions with regards to damage that can be caused by each type of firework and make sure there is sufficient fire protection available. etc. etc.

I’ve got the tall grass mowed down in a 200 ft radius around the house. Hope that is enough.

The local hooligans are already shooting off their firecrackers that they got on the Reservation. $510.00 fine for doing so.
