NMRA Bulletin Article: Indoor Backdrop

I was reading the thread on Matthew (OV)'s GE diesel locomotive collection. I’m way behind Matt with only three! I do see active Ebay auctions for 45 Tonners with current prices between $60 and $260. Since I’m ‘between jobs’, I’ll have to let them pass for now.

In Matt’s thread there was a a pix with a shower head showing in the background. The discussion made me remember that the latest issue of the NMRA Bulletin has a ‘how to do it’ article showing a novel way of making backdrops. The authors’ used rolled sheets of aluminum to produce really nice results. The continuous, seamless, wall to wall and bench to ceiling curveable background is even able to hide posts and corners.

If you’re an indoor model RRer, it might be of interest.

ps: I did look to see if LSC has an “Indoor Forum” before posting this here!!

I have a curved backdrop on my indoor layout. I use masonite sheets to form the curve. When I sheetrocked the walls, I used the standard 1/2" up to where the curve starts and then changed to 3/8" sheetrock. Then the 1/8" masonite is bent into the corner and held in place by the 1/2" sheetrock. Tape the joints and paint. Looks great.

Dont get the NMRA Bulletin, but i was planning to do something like Warren did with drywall, so it can be easily painted.

Warren:

Very nece looking job! Looks like a grain elevator (or other bulk plant) is in the near future??

Victor:

I would suggest you try to get the article. The backdrop they did looks similar to Warren’s, but they seem to have really cut down on the install labor. They used aluminum material that comes primed and ready to paint. No sheet rocking, ‘mudding’, sanding or finishing.

These are the back drops on my RR:

Still need to paint out the white border… Andre’

In my case I had to do the drywall any how. That end of the layout room was unfinished and left the stairs going up exposed. As I duck under at that point to access the back loop, water shutoff valve and storage, the wall only goes down to the layout. The skirting hides a WORLD of sins/junk…
