Nice to have a real life railroad

Now this is the way to play trains ! I guess money is no object?

“Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. today agreed to buy Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., making a $34 billion bet on the future of the U.S. economy”.

Cheers TOF in Lost Wages

I guess ol Warren always wanted a “model” railroad.

I think its up to 44 billion now. But who’s counting eh?

Jon.

He used to own a railroad, the GB&W.
He joked that it stood for “grab bag & walk”

I stated this on the old Bigtrains list, but will repeat for those not on that list.

I heard about Buffett’s purchase today. Buffett lives in Omaha which is the headquarters of UP and wondered what that might have to do with any of this? Wonder if somebody pissed him off or is it purely a money deal. I don’t think anything is ever purley a money deal.

Ric,

I think that BNSF is better shape than UP… UP got a lot of trouble when they got SP… BN & SF hit the ground running where UP & SP hit the ground crawling… So I would say the easy money won out… This is my humble opinion…

I thought mergers and amalgamations were supposed to result in economies of scale that would ensure profitable futures for the resulting entities.

I have suggested the merger of the “Port Orford Coast Railroad” and the “Ironwood Peter’s Pond & Western Railroad” to no avail. Young R.A.Smith is still holding out until we include the Rat Portage & Mattawa, short line in the deal.

There is another factor involved also. The NAX conglomerate of New York State has an option on any merger plans of the IPP&W.

As Vice President of Operations with the IPP&W; I can't see any merger happening within the next year, but what is going on in the back rooms is often hard to figure out. I'm just happy operating the IPP&W, and drawing top dollars.

Buffet isn’t one to waste money.

My question is…will Burlington Northern/Santa Fe now have “official greeters” at the door?

And I make sure I don't waste my money at a buffet, either!

But Jimmy Buffett admits to "spending (his) fans' money foolishly".... and even HE isn't dumb enough to want a railroad. Seaplane, yes... choo-choo, no.
