Large Scale Central

Newbie intro and question on LGB set

Hey guys, new here. I do not personally know anyone who operates or collects any type of trains so I have come here looking for a place to share a common interest. I have ben collecting and operating “G” for 10 or so years, mostly Lionel and LGB but a fair mix of others too.

So my question…I recently purchased a “20301BP Buffalo Pass” set, I just liked the looks of it. Can’t find much about it other than I was told it was 25 years old. Anyone know much about the history of this train/set?

Also the engine is missing one of the clear lens’s on the front headlight, bugs me…know where a replacement can be purchased?

Thanks for having me, hoping to offer some positive things as well as ask dumb questions!

Mark

Mark,
the set was released as a limited edition (2000 sets made) in 1984, commissioned by the U.S. LGB distributor, National Sales Office. It consisted of the #2076BP loco and two matching #3006 coaches.

The lens replacement is another matter. You may be able to make a replacement or, if lucky, source a spare lens as the lens was a generic part.

Welcome Mark…you’ve come to the right place. Any questions will be happily answered for you. It may take a discussion with plenty of eye gouging, name calling, arm twisting (maybe a few shots fired accross the bow for emphasis) lasting 12 pages, but eventually it will be answered…

Thanks guys, just the info I was looking for…figures I was lied to, only 24 yrs old, not 25!

Hi Mark,

There was one small variation in the sets produced. On the coaches some have serif numbers and some have sans serif numbers. This is just an interesting side note that has no impact on value.

Welcome aboard, Jack

Except that someone on eBay will advertise one or the other as rare in hopes of driving up the price.

Jon,

Yep and the next step will be “Rare in the USA and Canada”. hehehehe

Get ahold of Dave Watts at Watts Train Shop in Zionsville Indiana, he should have replacement headlight lenses. I am asuming its basily a Staniz based locomotive. Dave has excellent stock of LGB items as he buys collections and them sells them both on his own auction site and in the shop. Cheers Mike

Welcome aboard, Mark!

Two questions asked, two questions answered…thanks guys!

No problem Mark, welcome aboard. You can join many of us who are holding thier collective breath that LGB rises back to what it once was, or somewhere close to it and soon. I still think thier track is better than most for track powered operations. I am planning to aquire a few USA prototype trains now as well, gonna be a dual mode layout for me. Shawmut Car Shops in PA is building me a custom low nose GP9 that ran on our short line a few years ago. Cheers Mike

Simple,

a) collecting LGB is a specialty

b) getting spare parts is still possible, even in the good old USA.

PS I checked out your website … you’re welcome. Made me feel much better, there’s at least one guy who is even farther behind with doing updates.

Mike,

The performance of the Code332 track i.e. conductivity, weathering etc. of the four German mfgs LGB®, PIKO, Thiel and TrainLine 45 should be on par. The profiles come from the same source.
