Newbe Questions/FAQ

Hi Everyone,

I’m VERY new to garden railroading, and currently, my free time is limited until I finish grad school. In the interim, I would like to get my feet wet modeling some rolling stock cars. Does anyone know of some good resources (free/cheap plans, FAQ, suppliers, etc.) to help this newbe?

In my quest to be garden railroader, I have not come across an FAQ. Maybe this should be my first project?!?

Thanks,
Rob

Hey Rob, and welcome.

You can check out the Large Scale Wiki over at http://www.lsceverything.com. We’re working on adding stuff, and if you have any questions, just ask here!

Rob,
Welcome.
You should also check out Bob’s article on building the EBT boxcar. http://www.largescalecentral.com/articles/view.php?id=60

Plus, I have an article in this month’s Garden Railways on building a boxcar from styrene. Though I suspect that Bob’s kit is a lot cheaper and easier. I built 6 of Bob’s kit. and 6 of mine…

Hi Rob,

I would read, read ,read. Check as many sites as you can and try to form your own thoughts from all that is put in front of you.

At this time I would resist buying items and try to figure what standard you want to folllow. Ask questions and expect to get answers that are 180 degrees opposed to each other. There is a whole lot of Ford/Chevy debate that goes on and from all this you can form your own ideas of what will work for you.

Welcome, it should be a fun time.

Hi Bob, Bruce, and Ric,

Thanks for the information. I’ve been reading…and reading…and reading, but sometimes it is all overwhelming. I know I want to work with live steam. I’ll probably start with a Accucraft Ruby first…then kitbash it as my “skills” improve. I’d like to work on a few rolling stock cars until I have the time and money (newly married) to move outside. I’ve read Bob’s article and it got me itching to build something!!! Great article by the way Bob.
