Instead of a Budd RDC, this would be a Budd RJC (Rail Jet Car). In a desperate move, and definitely thinking outside of the box, NYC took one of the nacelles from a B-36 that held two J-47 jet engines, and mounted it on top of a Budd RDC. Read all about it. This would make a great kit bash. Can’t you hear the Darth Vader theme writ loud?
Oh No…
I like it.
I wonder what sort of high pitched screaming sound system would be appropriate?

I can hear it!!!
With the new Aristo RDC-3 out, I could see someone making a large scale version.
I remembered an article on how to convert a Kato N scale RDC into the Jet RDC and a quick search found it online. Some of the same techniques could be used for a large scale version.
Here’s the article (note it’s a .pdf so you need some type of Adobe reader)
Why not use a model airplane jet engine, rather than rely on a sound board?
Then you could closely approximate Slot Trains.
Imagine living near the tracks… people already whine about the noise as it is. (I guess when they moved in, they thought the tracks were merely for display.)
This is a well documented experiment and somewhere around here, or in a book AndyC has, is a mile by mile account of the ride and experiment. Lots of things are tried, some are even successful.
Now that’s a pimped ride!

High pitched screaming sound… My ex girlfriend might work for that.
How long till some Japanese dude has this with fully functional turbines in Z scale?
Dear All,
Lionel’s new model might be the reason for recent interest.
Classic Toy Trains did a review in the November 2010 issue, which is available online to CTT subscribers.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,

After the experiments, the M-497 was dismantled and the RDC commuter car returned to regular service. The jet engines, too, were reused, finding new life in New York Central’s jet snowblower cars.
