Large Scale Central

New Years Challenge

I built mine using left over wood scraps from my lumber pile. The frames are all wood. The decking is piece by piece. I used Accucraft trucks and KD couplers. There is some brass rod and some Ozark stuff out of my Parts box. Some tiny nails, brads and fasteners. And some glue. Nothing was purchased strictly for these builds. First I poured thru my logging books to find my prototypes. I copied some pictures and went from there. They are 1:20.3 scale. I wanted to take these pictures outside on the layout, but weather hasn’t cooperated at all! The first is a West Side Lumber block car. Used to deliver waste blocks of wood to the camps for cooking and fire wood.

The second is a typical “Pulpwood” car. Used to transport limbs and trees not big enough for the sawmill, but have a little value for pulpwood. I haven’t had a chance to load it with pulpwood yet.

The following pics are some cars I have also scratchbuilt but not qualified for the contest. A west Side sand car (Gondola).

A short Skeleton log car:

A water car flat that carries extra batteries hidden in the tank.

Another water car with batteries made out an old tender.

Fuel oil car

And my out of the box Accucraft West Side cubby that brings up the rear on my log trains.

Hey John,

They look great, are you bringing them to the club meeting this Saturday? What is that #73 loco in the back ground? Pictures please!!

Chuck

Chuck,
No, I won’t be bringing them. I think I’ll run an ore car drag with a mallet.

#73 is a kitbashed LGB Mike. I didn’t research enough and it should be #74. The RGS had #74 Connie.
But since this is a Mike, I guess it doesn’t matter, huh?

Really nice work!! Thanks for sharing, gives me a couple of ideas for my logging equipment.

Bob C.

looks real good John. I have to figure out how to post mine.

Nice looking build John. Since you only got shots of the one side of that block car,and it’s the first time I’ve seen one , How did they unload ? Is there access on the other side? Real nice equipment there John.

Misplaced post

John,

What did you kit bash it to be? Did you change the scale? Any pictures or documentation of your work? Great pictures, love the tank cars, thanks for sharing.

David, They unloaded them from the sides, at the bottom, were trap doors. You have to use your imagination to see the ones on my block car.

Here’s a shot of the pulpwood car.

John my imagination with the help of that pic will work just fine. Nice bit of detail info to store.

I don't have anything in the junk box yet. So I went with left overs .

Base was done by coating the bottom half of a paint jar with exterior grout and placing stones.
Uprights are wood. Bucket is the end of a dowel that I drilled out.
Roof shingles were split from a piece of scrap from the station build.Stained with coffee.
Take up spool is from an old bic pen and bent wire
Plastic was aquired from a local bathroom installer.
Total cost was zip nodda zilch

Guess I’ll use this for a future farm house.

David,
That’s a nice well.
I don’t have one in my town yet.
I guess the crew is too lazy to dig one.

David M, Neat detail item. I probably have enough materials laying around to do something like that. John B, Nice job on the cars. Great choice of prototypes. Ralph

John ,
I like those . You dun good .
Mike

SO is this the official thread and I’m to move my post here?

No,
I think each person should start his own threads.

That makes no sense John?,so it gets titled what? “New Years Challenge II” Technically your and my build’s belong in the Rolling Stock section not here? If that is the case then your Topic description of “New Years Challenge” should be changed and titled as your build titled whatever, then entered into Mik’s thread with a copy/paste link? Thinkin’ out loud
Fixed

Dave,
If I could edit the title to JB’s entry, I would.
But my name is under the title.
You could use the same title and your name would appear as author, as well.
Easy-peasy, huh?

I just think everyone should have their own, that’s all.

My misunderstanding John I thought you started this thread for all the builds. I’ll pull what I can and start my own

One Mother Hubbard yard goat… or is it a mutt? It’s a little bit Reading, a little bit Lehigh Valley, and a lot of leftover bits. Total new purchases… $3.98 for a piece of Plastruct and a mono audio jack.

The loco was mostly made from a bunch of Delton c-16 parts leftover from the Stainz Mallet with some Scientific (I think) parts from a battery powered PoS, and a Kalamazoo brick. The Reading style semi-slopeback tender was totally scratched from wood and plexi except for the trucks a stick of Evergreen I-beam I found in a drawer while looking for something else, and some stray detail castings.
