New Ventilated Box Car Battery/Control Car

I liked the look of these cars so I decided to build one but I had no idea what they actually used them for. Seems they were sometimes called “watermelon cars” because they often moved fresh fruit that would spoil if “trapped” in a hot box car. Who knew?

Gotta find a bunch of tiny melons!

Mark - looking good. You might just try making some crates that look like they hold fruit. Ozark used to have some pages you could download, print out and put around some rectangular solids.

Though in my case, I probably only needed the labels on the front of the crates.

Sweet!!!

By the way Bruce…Your car looks fantastic. I think I will go burn mine now…

Wow Korm…Nice!

Guinness boxes??? You had to give me Guinnesss boxes? I might have to build a whole beer train!

Thanks!

it was easy. i really painted just one box. the rest was copy, paste and scaling plus some labels from the net.
(things, one does, when the backside is too lazy to leave the computerchair…)

Thats really great Korm. thanks for sharing. I will definately be using some of these.

I thought the Jack Daniels Whiskey looked more interesting . . And who was Gay Johnny ??? [Don’t answer - I don’t really want to know.]

Thanks Korm. I saved them for future use.

in former, normal times, “gay” meant friendly, happy. so Gay Jonny was just another (real) fruit-brandname.
and now it is a “take a second look” eyecatcher for layouts.

i try to find brands for the ads and boxes in the layout, that either makes people comment, or look twice.
(a coke ad, even an old one, gets no comment. they are too common.)

Styrene rod came today so I was able to make up some doors this evening. Some paint/walkways and dry transfers and I’ll be done! . .

Nice. Now I understand the long door track.

Another one done waiting for the lettering to arrive… . .

I guess I should finish out this thread…

Markings are custom dry transfers…

Edit: Yes, the S.R.R.L. may have never owned such a car but I needed a battery car for my S.R.R.L. Forney…Which I no longer own! I will likely re-paint soon.
