New Tyco Cable Load/Flat Car Build

The next step in my HO set re-creation is the flat with cable load. Mine was the Great Northern version. .

. I am starting with the USA Army flat…Just about the perfect length and has a full width wood deck like the “prototype”. I am debating wether to add the “skirt” to the side as the USA flat has a ‘straight’ lower deck. I will need to repaint it anyway (deck and car-body). .

. The USA flat also comes with the “wooden tie-down blocks”, while not exactly like the original they still give me the look I am after.

My other hobby is stained glass so I go through a lot of solder…I have saved a few spools over the years as I have always had this project in the back of my mind… .

. A few styrene bits… .

. Six more to go!

This is as far as I got before I ran out of styrene… .

Very Nice Mark! Really enjoying these threads!

Nice work Mark

That’s cool. If you have a good idea for doing this in G let me know!

As with my previous build post on the Tyco skid-flat these are ‘g’ recreations of HO cars I had as a kid…Or did I miss the humor? I’ve been known to miss a few things…except dinner, I never miss dinner!
.
As in this reply, where I missed the spelling of “known”.

No Mark, you didn’t miss the humor; it was my bad… I misunderstood. I had wondered what these “H.O.” posts were doing here, but I was far too polite to be an ass and ask about them. Turns out I was too thick to get what you were doing. Now I get it: Recreations of old HO stuff but in G. Clever, and completely understandable.

I have actually done sorta’ the same thing myself, getting a couple of G versions of favourite old HO gear, but by purchasing them. I haven’t scratchbuilt or bashed to such an extent in G yet as I’ve been concentrating on tracklaying, on operations, on structures, and on public shows and promotion of the hobby, so no time for concentrating on detailed build projects.

Specialized and scratchbuilt cars etc may come later… down the line, as it were. When I was younger I used to do an awful lot of scratchbuilding in Sn3, but I’m strictly into G now. I do want to make a cable reel car at some point, but a wooden one, much older-looking than yours. That’s why I asked you for ideas. But it would take me a hundred years to collect 3-4 solder reels for it! The solder I’m using now must be thirty years old & I’ve got tons … :o

Nice work, by the way. I admire what you’ve done here.
