New train display in our living room.

Wife and I spent the day carrying this beast of a display cabinet (that I found local for sale on FB) up a flight of stairs and into our living room so we could display some of our larger locomotives.

looks really good and it was just big enough to fit the trains in, had to take the rear coupler of the mikado so it would fit!

Nice

Vincent, I’ve never had furniture on my wish list, but I think you just changed that.

Shane

Beautiful display cabinet for your trains! But alas, here in earthquake country (Southern California) this is not an option. OR at least, not worth the risk.

Thanks for posting.

We secure cabinets to the wall, and then put the “child proof” internal latches on doors. I’ve lived here all my life and no damage to contents of a cabinet I can remember since the 50’s.

Anyway, I was confused at the first picture and commentary that you had to pull the coupler off the Mikado to get it to fit, when I saw a Hudson on the top shelf.

Then, I realized (and I’m posting for confirmation) The top shelf is an MTH 1:32 hudson, then a 1:32 GG-1, then an LGB sumpter valley, then a LGB Mikado (thus about 1:22 to 1:24 the largest and the longest) and then finally it looks like a couple of Bachmann K or C units?

Just clearing my confusion.

You sir are correct!

The bottom shelf is a Bachmann K27, just one, it is the reflection from the mirror making it look like (2).

I thought all along the Bachmann was the longest locomotive I owned, but trying to get them to fit in the display case proved me wrong!

I built some storage cabinets, and was likewise surprised at what the longest thing was. I had one steamer just a bit too long to have the drawbar hooked up and had to unhook the drawbar and gain 1/4" to fit.

Anyway, nice showcase of some nice locos to appreciate!

Have you given any consideration to perhaps put some on rollers and power them for sound/motion? (smoke would be too much ha ha, like fog in a box)

I am considering it on possibly one of the shelves, I have everything I need to do it, it will just be now another item I add to my list of things I want to do and see if I actually have the time to get to it!

Really wish I could get a better picture of it, the mirror/glass and lighting make it one of the toughest things I have tried to get a picture of!

We were burned once by the Sylmar Quake in 1971…had a huge heavy glass and wood cabinet larger than the size of the one that Vincent is showing. Our cabinet went over and crashed to the floor! IT was NOT fastened to the wall (we have ALL learned a few things about earthquakes here in So. Cal. since 1971) and yes we now fasten all cabinets to the wall! We lost many priceless archeological artifacts in that quake. We just don’t take the risk anymore :). We have lived in So. Cal. for 70 years plus, native Californians (a rarity).

I am a native too, and was living in Orange County at the time of the Sylmar quake, South Los Angeles before that, so stuff rattled pretty good. You are currently way North, were you in Burbank at the time of the quake?

Since that time everything screwed to the walls. I’m now back in San Diego, about 15 miles from where I was born. Fewer and less severe quakes down here it seems.

Yeah, the Sylmar quake was a wake up call to many people.

Yea, but what Mr., or Mrs., Potatohead is sitting beside the cabinet?

There is actually two more potato heads up on top of the cabinet.

We were living in Studio City at the time and south of Ventura Blvd. part way up the hills…overlooked Universal City. Yeah that one is the worst we’ve ever felt…either before OR since including the 1994 Northridge quake (in Burbank). STILL gun shy :)!

We think it’s an S&M thing Maynard so we try not to bring it up along with the gnomes.

Looking good Vincent!

There is a gnome up on top with the two potato heads also…

Whatever gets…um…yea. Ok.

Put a 2-watt LED puck light in the cabinet to use as a nightlight.
