Here’s my new toy. Roy Woods (UK) makes these models of the De Winton loco. The driver is a Rob Bennett figure in 7/8ths scale.
Pete, That is awesome. wish I had one you lucky dog;)
That looks like a lot of fun. What is the fuel?
Pete how do you like it? Chris Bird has a few videos of one running with the chuffer ad it looks and sounds great. That’s on my wish list, someday.
Jon it should be butane
Here is the site for Roywood. He makes the Janet also. Another nice little loco.
I like the look of it a lot, but as I live in a Florida beach condo, there isn’t any track here! My pal across the river says I can go and try it, but finding time would be good.
Chris Bird has a Regner and one of these running together in his videos. The Regner’s are geared down 8:1, which is appropriate for an oscillating cylinder loco (they spin very fast.) I liked the exposed wheels and spokes on the RYM version - it apparently speeds like a rocket though! I think I ordered it with all the options, so I should have a Chuffer in there somewhere.
It runs on Butane - Roy had lots of fun testing it, as I asked him to blacken the cylinders. Whether that messed things up or it was something else, he had to replace them before he shipped it.
Incidentally, Roy’s service was great, and he was very responsive to emails, etc. No trouble shipping to the US. On the contrary, R Bennett’s figure took forever and it was like pulling teeth to get him to send it. (On the positive side, as he was such a pain, he painted it for me by way of an apology, even though I only asked for an unpainted figure.)
That looks real cool Pete. I would like to see one run.Would it be a good starter for someone who don’t know much (anything)about live steam.
On another note, you need to use your influence with Dr Rivet, and Scott McConald to come over to this forum so we can watch their great live steam videos.

Paul Chris Bird of Summerland chuffer has a few videos. Here is the Roywood site http://www.roywoodmodels.co.uk/

It would be a nice first steamer but if you live in the US you will probably pay over $1000 with the chuffer, pressure gauge etc… Correct me if I am wrong Pete. That’s what keeping me from getting one.
There is a lot of great steamers out on the market for beginners. Regners easy line, Roundhouse has a few nice ones as well as Accucraft. I like the Bellflower Cricket. It US made.

Shawn,
I did pay about $1,000 - 635 GBP plus shipping to be exact. However, the Regner Chaloner (a similar loco) will cost you $1,075, as will a Lumberjack or the new Otto.
I don’t think this is exactly a beginner loco, if only because of the cost and the features. Yes, there are several locos that are suitable for beginners and much less $$.

Paul,
As noted below by Shawn, there are lots of good starter locos. This one is a bit pricey, but otherwise good for a beginner.
The Regner “Easy Line” includes several that you would enjoy. I, too, like the Lumberjack, but I am also partial to vertical boilers. I might have bought a Regner “Otto” instead, or a Chaloner. . .
The Accucraft small locos are much improved, though I am not a “Ruby” fan.
I’m not sure I have any influence over Dr Rivet (does anyone?) but Scott is usually amenable to suggestion. I’ll give it a try.
Pete, there is not much left as a beginner loco. Seems prices are getting higher, look at the Ruby pushing 500 now for one with a pressure gauge. I remember my Ida cost me 289.00 granted it was about 15 years ago
A short list of entry level locomotives available new.
Accucraft:
Dora 040
Ruby 040 - multipule versions
Forney 244
Plantation 042
Roundhouse:
Sammie
Bertie
Millie
Regner:
Max
Lumberjack
Chaloner
Vincent
Willi
Otto
Emma

I don’t think anyone has influence over Jim, more like he has influence over the rest. But if we ask nicely I’m sure he will come on here.
Thanks for the advice on starter engines. And you are right Jason, But not being able to visit his great layout, I really enjoy the excellent videos coming from there.

Cool looking loco. Later RJD
Pete, that is a lovely model. There is a large interest here in the UK for small, often quaint, models. Maybe it is the small backyards. lol
By the way the driver is in fact a model of the late Fred Dibnah. I am sure many folks Stateside have seen his tv programmes and LS modelers will also be quite familiar, I am sure, with his interests and work.
His early tv appearances - I mention this as they may not have been screened in North America - had very little to do with engines and industrial heritage. He was a steeplejack and was instrumental in demolishing, in a spectacular manner, very many chimneys of closed northern English cotton and wool factories.
Much-missed by all who love steam and destruction - in equal measure! I used to have to translate his speech into French for my then NDN, who couldn’t understand a word he said!

Thanks Alan. I thought he looked a bit clean !
Pete have you ran it yet?
