Large Scale Central

New to the forum but not into garden railroading!

Hallo, everyone !
I want to introduce myself : My name is Jo, abreviation of the name Johannes, and I am 43 years old : I live at the north sea coast at Germany. We have a small village with 800 inhabitants here and normally I feel very well to live in a somewhat rural area of Germany! Next bigger city is Oldenburg and that´s a 60 mile trip! I came into garden railroading when I saw some 5" Gauge Rails lying around a little park near the district towns central station 15 years ago. My interest was brought up and since that I attended at the Emden Model engineering society and my main interest there is toysteam and gauge 1 live steam locos ! My other interests are Music, Photography, writing poems and short stories, musicals and opera! I don´t know what to expect but I will see what can happen !

cheers Jo

Welcome aboard Jo. I’m sure you’ll find a bunch that share your common interest on here. You’ll also get most if not all of your questions answered. We tend to be a bit free with the tongue at times but feel free to join in anytime. We’ll throw you out if we don’t want you   ( that last bit was intended humor)

Herzliches Wilkommen, Jo!! I live much of the year in East Anglia, but I’m lucky enough to spend a lot of time over in the Pacific North West of the USA with friends and Canada with friends and family. So my interests are mainly North American trains, although I do have some live-steam gauge 1 and a 16mm scale Beyer-garratt, too. I also have a 1/3scale diesel that yiu can see on www.fenlandlightrailway.co.uk - I’m the society secretary, BTW.

This forum is pretty lively, and can get a bit sniffy from time to time, but that’s only like any family. We all mean well, and there is a total treasure of knowledge and experience here - many posters are actually well-known article writers in the two main magazines, with great projects to their credit, too.

Some of us here are also German speakers, but seeing how well you manage English, I’m sure we’ll never get a chance to show how smart WE are!

So welcome - no matter what kind of trains you run in your backyard.

@ TAC: My brother in law is a native Englishman and I had to learn this language 12 long years in school . So to talk together will not be a problem . Sometimes I have to struggle a little bit with the technical vocabulary because they didn´t teach you at school but I will try my best to make myself understood ! I am definitely into Gauge 1 Tinplate live steam and G scale narrow gauge live steam and let me calm you, I will never be boasting with what I´ve learned or done: It´s all about large scale garden railroading and so it´s ok for me! Some of you might know me from another forum dealing with toy steam: Collected over a period of 15 years I own 33 steam engines and 13 of them are locos ,mostly run on 45mm track . Only one of my 3 vintage locos runs on 0 gauge track! I only have a temporary layout as the district wide known rowdies live three houses away from me and If these xxxxxx (censored) Idiots see rails in my garden they will destroy them ! But it´s fun to lay them out temporarily and see some engines trundling around the track while sitting in the sun, having a drink and watch them pass by ! It calms down from dayly troubles ! It´s pure recovery I swear !

cheers Joe

Welcome Joe.

Welcome to LSC Johannes from another (although in my case, expatriate) Brit.

Welcome Jo.
I’m sure the Live Steamers here are happy to have another join the ranks.
Ralph

moin, moin Hannes!

wellcome.
but be aware, if they warn you that they are free-tongued or sniffy… that is by north american standard.
the guys here are a lot less impolite, than many germans are in the net.
the main problem with undersanding will be the fact, that english and northamerican have a lot of different expressions.

lots of knowledge assembled here!

korm

ps: rails and neighbours…
ever tried to connect some track to a fence ticker? (weidezaun-impulsgeber)

Welcome!

Welcome to the ““Madhouse””… A lot of good people here…

Welcome Jo from a beginner in Live Steam.

Very true. The "King's" English and what we speak here in the Colonies can be quite different. I needed to phone London yesterday about a technical issue and although I have no problem understanding British accents, it took a bit for us to get on the same page :)

Welcome Jo to the best forum on the net ( as I see it) Look around feel free to speek up. This is a great group of people here from all over the world

Welcome to the best forum and a great group of guys. You will learn a lot from them. We also have a pet Rooster here. but watch out for him. LOL

Thanks to every one for the friendly welcome ! I can tell you for shure that I am no “Rivet counter” ! And I will not argue about the fact wether engines are prototypical or not : Every engine able to run on 45 mm rails is very welcome by me ! I like to share the view on engines with others wether they have the same opinion like I have or not ! But that´s no reason to argue ! I mentioned before :Beauty is allways in the eye of the beholder and so no point to argue about ! I like the steam critters very much. The more unusual an engine is the more it appeals to me . That´s a reason why i like the ones with an upright boiler so much : I own a Regner “Willi” and a Regner “Max” and they please my eyes very much.Besides that they are good runners too!

cheers Joe

Welcome to the monkey house. Pull up a baboon and have a capuchin on us!

Welcome Jo from the southern Oregon coast (USA). Like you I live on the rural coast but adjacent to a much larger city than you (Port Orford, with 1200 residents), hehe! We even have one blinking traffic light! I hope you enjoy your sojourn here.
