Maybe in the tower, anyway…

According to the picture’s properties that’s Gord Bellamy (left) and Fred Mills (right) in 1983. That’s almost 30 years ago. That may even precede battery power. The dark ages?

Mathew; and others;

Choke cables are way less expensive than those controls, for anyone on a tight budget, and work well for switches beyond the “Reach Zone”.
With battery power, we walk around with our train, so switch control is more like a real railroad operation, on a short line railroad, where switches are thrown manually, by the crew on the train.
We have had several choke cables in service for over 5 years, with no maintenance beyond a squirt of motor oil twice a year.
Usually choke cables are formed with a stainless steel cable incased in a plain steel sheath. Running a bead of motor oil along the sheath keeps the cable lubricated well enough to give good service through all our weather conditions…we don’t operate during the Winter as we tried that years ago and gave up on any thought of freezing our butts, fingers, and feet…!!!

Here is my version of the Mills Mk 2 ground throw, installed on one of the switches in the yard at Burke.

Nice Bob - All it needs is a little rust colored paint a few years out in the weather.

Most of them seem to go “Rust coloured” within three weeks…without the need of paint.

Ahhh yes …bell cranks
