Large Scale Central

new sawmill for the KMRR

Now that spring is here Im taking a little break from the micro layout and started to build a new Sawmill for my outdoor layout. I wanted to do something similar to what I built on micro layout only larger. I was never happy with the current sawmill. It never looked good in pictures and didn’t fit in with the rest of the structures. I ripped all the wood I needed on the table saw yesterday and started to build the frame last night. Today I got the planking down and the roof beams. Next I need to build a storage shed off to the side. The entire edge along the bottom will be done with stone mosaic. Not sure how detailed I plan on doing the inside but probably something like I did with the micro.

Im also in the process of making a logging crane that will go onto a flat car I started to build.

Looks like you’re off to a great start. I had plans for a saw mill but with the current layout condition it’ll proll get moved back a year…

What are you building with?

Terry

Thanks Terry. Im using all cedar held with Titebond III and pin nailer, it seems to hold up well especially with some Thompson water seal. No specific plans other then what’s in my empty brain lol…

Love it;)

maybe make two?

What ya gonna roof it with? Might ya want to try some of my roofing panels? Let me know and I’ll send ya some

Some ideas perhaps?

Off to a good start Shawn. You’ll need to expand the line soon

Dave my plan is to use wood decking for the roof and then something overtop but not sure. I like your roofing panels and they would look great on it. If you have extra Ill take some. The roof is about 31x11. Thanks

Roosta thanks for the photos, im sure the will help out. Not sure how detailed the inside will be. All depends on how much of the inside will be visible

That is looking real good Shawn.

Rooster, nice shots of a small sawmill operation.

This will be an interesting thread for sure.

Doc Tom

Made more progress. Got the wood planks on the roof completed, added some cross beams to the support posts (or whatever they are called lol…) I started to add siding to the side building. This will get a different style roof.

I would like to do that except I need the Band Saw from Western Scale Models to make it close to correct.

I would love to detail the inside with the western scale stuff but being outdoors year round it would get ruined and full of grit. Plus being on the ground the details would never be noticed to that extent. Im going with the 10ft rule for the inside.

Shawn,

I think Rooster just marked his territory!!!

I call not it on the clean up!!!

Seriously, nice work.

nice job;)

Them post brackets are screaming for lambs tongues

Ok Rooster what do lamb tongues look like. Mr google is no help on this one. Must be a pennsyltucky thing…

I don’t see any in that picture Maynard.

Shawn a lambs tongue is basically a chamfered edge on the edge of the bracket. There are many different designs but was very common on basic framing and could be picked out with paint. Note the tongue on the bottom.
