New plants for the RGS

My oldest son, who owns a nursery business in Elkton Md, was on a buying trip last fall to Oregon. One of the places he visited grows a lot of miniature plants and unusual conifers. He was kind enough to order about 30 different miniature plants for me.

Below is a link to pix of some of the stuff he bought while he was there…

I tried to get close enough so the tags are readable…

Very nice.
I will be picking out plants later this year.
Half the layout is in 100% shade, the other about 15% shade.
It’ll be an interesting aspect of the hobby.

Neat. I need to get a lot more plantings in this year. Should be doable since I think the trackwork is basically done.

Neat shrubbery, Ken.

Bruce,

Time to hit up the home depot for those one gallon dwarf alberta spruce for the sunnier spots and dwarf english boxwood for the shady spots. You can’t beat those $7 prices.

That’s the ticket, Brian. Sure beats the $17 prices that they wanted at the ECLSTS.

Have relatives in Oregon where did you get the plants??? dont see any name in post??? Must be a gazzillionaire, from what ive seen so far as to pricing on the web for minature cedars, and then the shipping. Like to know where in Oregon he purchased! Thanks The Regal

I bought $50 worth of miniature plants last year at ECLSTS. Most died indoors before the weather turned warm enough to plant and the rest, except one lonely conifer, died within a month of planting. Never again.

My $7 Spruces and Boxwoods are mostly doing great. I lost one over the winter, and another looks burned, but I think I can save that one. The Boxwoods can be broken up into 4 or more smaller plants - that makes them even cheaper. We’re about 2 weeks away from the stock coming in to HD & Lowes here.

This was a wholesale dealer in Boring Or. He’s bought a few truckloads of stuff from there. This was on one of the trucks.

The name is on the little triangle on the end. Hard to read.

I have pretty good luck with the conifers, so-so luck with the perinnels. But I can usually get them dirt cheap of off him.

I noticed two Alberta Spruces we put in last year are on their last legs, so will be replacing them, once some come in out here in the windy plains of Nebraska. Jerry

I have 3 that are 6' tall now. The trick may be to keep the wind off them in the winter. Another trick is to slice the outside of the root ball a few times with a shovel blade or trowel, to loosen it up. They can get pot bound, even after they get planted.
