New Lithium Chemistry?

Rick at Cordless Renovations is peddling something new. Lithium Prismatic batteries. Is this a new chemistry? Is so, WTF? How is it different from the other lithiums?

Is it:
Safer?
Longer lasting?
More dense?
Will it straighten your spine and cause us to win the war in (insert name here). Oh, wait, that’s the snake oil that I sell. Never mind.

Seriously, what is this stuff about?

They are most likely the same as found in cell phones etc.
The ones I have seen are a prepackaged single flat cell with wiper contacts on one end that match a socket in a phone.
They may come in different sizes and therefore capacities.
I think Mr Isard is planning on ganging together a number of them in series to get adequate voltage, and parallel to achieve capacity.

If they are like the Li-Ion Prismatic batteries I have experienced in cell phones and other small devices expect them to crap out after two years.

Our version of Sanyo’s Prismatic 103450 cells is not cell phone battery. Tony these are not what you call a “wiper contact,” not really sure what that means, but there’s no socket just weld tabs.

The Sanyo Prismatic (UF103450P) are 3.7V @ 2000mAh with an internal fuse. These batteries will provides higher energy density (able to hold a greater amount of energy in a smaller nickel case) with higher battery safety and are free from leakage. Sanyo has rated the charge / discharge cycles at 800, so in turn I would guess around 300 - 400 usages well over 5 years of runtime.

Over the past year our vendors have had an increasing amount of custom installations, so we needed to supply them with a small, lightweight battery that is easy to install and give their clients 3 -4 hours of runtime. That’s why we decided to offer the Prismatic line of lithium cells because of their durability.

Right now we are offering three different voltages 11.1V, 14.8V & 18.5V manufactured in two different amp hours, 2 & 4amps.

Here is a RS3 installation we did for Bruce Wallace with a 18.5V 2000mah Lithium Prismatic Battery-Pack.

Nicely done! What is the function of the reed switch?

Hello Michael,

The Reed Switch is to reset the QSI Magnum Decoder and to control the volume.

Prismatic is just the industry term for cells with square corners, not cylindrical.
