New Harz Mallet by Kiss

Kiss has just announced a new Mallet 995906.
A very good move, considering the success of
the first Mallet (sadly most were destroyed in
the storage fire) Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

The storage fire also took with it five Gauge 1 Epoch II passenger cars waiting to be sent to me... :(

Thankfully, I had not paid up.

Nice little model, Zubi, but a lot of money for a sparkie, no matter how nice.

Best wishes

tac

Yes, Terry, sorry to hear that! The fire also consumed most of the pretty RhB Moguls, one of which I hoped to be mine… Well, these brass models by KISS are certainly not cheap but they are very high quality and very nicely detailed pieces. For me there is actually very little alternative since I am addicted to two things 1:22.5 and live steam (but these usually do not come together so I have to buy them separately…) My only consolation in this sparkie case is that KISS fine pieces cost less than Aster/LGB and half of the price of Dingler VIK… Best, Zubi

So where is that Kiss K model?
What is it, two or three years now since announced?
It’s still on their website.

Nice.
I especially like the weathering visible on the pilot, and the links, with obvoius signs of use.

I wonder how they managed to capture the impression of the prototype with the wrinkles in the side tanks like they did?

Pretty amazing.

Nice of them to identify the bottom photo as prototype… Das Original.

One would never have guessed.

Pretty good for a photoshopped picture of the prototype.

Nope, you can’t beat the prototype for realism!

Curmee, do not worry! they shop them, clean and repaint before release, to look like new, Zubi

John, the K-36 has been available for one and half years now, it was released in autumn 2006. As far as I know they are still available from Kiss. Grab one while you can. Best, Zubi

John’s confusion is quite understandable, the delivery dates from KISS are more of a wild guess than a firm commitment.

BTW Zubi, they could have added the “prototype photo” to all the pictures in that blurb.

Hans-Joerg, They were very bad that is true but they have improved recently. I mean, the Mallet was delayed by some 2 years or so, but Fiffi and Pfiffi less than half a year. Actually I do not mind delays at all - this gives me some more time to get the funds for these locos. As Terry pointed out they are not the cheapest… Plus, in my opinion these are excellent products, the initial huge delay with the first Harz Mallet was due to the fact that KISS chose to change the manufacturer after they evaluated the prototype! Rather than delivering a sub-quality product they chose to scrap the project with the first factory and restart from scratch with another manufacturer. I must say that I prefer this kind of commitment to quality even at the cost of a substantial delay. (sadly I never got the first Mallet because mine burned in the storage fire:-(((
Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Zubi,

I don’t mind the delay either, but some people get to be very leery with the preorder routine, the announced ETA and the delays. They have no patience! OTOH I’d rather have it 6 or 8 months late and up to snuff. Up to snuff will be the question when the green Ge4/4’ finally arrives.
