NEW from RCS. Whistle only sound systems for Live Steam locos.

RCS is proud to announce the immediate availability of whistle only sound systems for Live Steam locos.

Click Pics to hear sound play.

L & B “LYN” whistle. British Narrow Gauge

USA Mainline 3 Chime. (Sound clip courtesy of Mr Jon Radder)

USA Narrow Gauge 5 chime.

In a nutshell each sound system is literally plug in. Power is provided by the 5 volt R/C battery supply.

The only wiring is hooking up a suitable 8 ohm speaker.

Use any R/C Channel to activate sound. The Channel # 5 bind button on all RCS, Micron and Deltang Tx hand-pieces is ideal. Stick radios too.

Full details are HERE

USA sounds made available with the valuable assistance of Peter Thornton.

Wow …the USA 3 chime is dope !

This post has been edited by: Rooster … Nice work Tony and I don’t even like steam!

Wow! Very cool. Always wondered why this wasn’t done before

This is a really great idea and I’m happy to be a very tiny part of the development. That sound, however, is not USA Mainline. It is actually USA Eastern Narrow Gauge. Recorded at the East Broad Top.

As soon as I figure out how to cram in a speaker, this will be onboard my Shay. Thanks Tony (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Hi Ric.

Thanks for the comment.

I have actually had the little LYN sound for more than a year and it has sold quite well for small Brit type steamers.

The biggest problem is extraneous background noise make many excellent clips unusable.

It wasn’t until Jon Radder generously allowed me to use the EBT 3 x chime whistle did I have access to a good clean recording.

The best recordings come when the locos are stationary. Especially after maintenance work.

Like this C38 mainline NSWGR passenger loco.

It was recorded after a major rebuild just outside the workshop. The sound card will be available soon. 90+ Gauge # 1 Live Steam models were made.

The biggest problem is where to put the speaker.

Thanks for your help Jon.

It was Peter Thornton who told me that it was the same type of whistle as used on the K4’s etc.

(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)Could be! It was a Baldwin whistle and they made a lot of standard gauge too. The way you describe it on your website is perfect. BTW, Mr. Radder was my father (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

OK Jon.

Just trying to be polite.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

BTW, Peter pointed out that your sample my not be 100% perfect sound. That has been fixed on production versions. New samples will be sent as soon as they arrive here.

Is the “crossing” whistle all you can do, or can you give single toots for in the yards.?

John, it’s a simple single sound playback. Could be anything, but only one on this board. They have a 5 sound board in the works (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Nevin at the East Broad Top confirmed the PRR whistles are very similar. The 3-chime will work on the K4 (which is where mine is going, and that tender is mostly empty so I am hoping to get a BIG speaker somewhere.) It also works for the G5 and E6 (Accucraft & WuHu) live steamers, and many more.

I think Tony found the 5-chime whistle recording on a std gauge loco, and from my digging it appeared the D&RGW used that type on both their std and narrow gauge locos. I plan to put one in my DSP&P Mason Bogie with a big speaker.

Almost any Youtube video of a steam excursion includes lots of whistling, so it is easy to compare these sounds with the prototype you have.

My Accucraft Countess now has the “Lyn” whistle and a small Radio Shack speaker. Obviously you need to use the biggest one that will fit, with a proper baffle (enclosure.) I just ordered a whole bunch of 20-50mm round and rectangular speakers to play with. . .

Hello John.

These whistles are single sound only.

Very soon there will be a micro SD card based version that will be loadable with up to eight sounds.

The user can load their own sounds or purchase the first version using a reconstructed 3 x chime file for:

1 press = 1 x toot STOP

2 press = 2 x toots Forward.

3 press = 3 x toots Reverse.

4 press = Grade crossing.

5 press = Bell hand rung.

6 press = Bell power ringer.

7 press = All Aboard call.

It has been designed with switching operations in mind.

I have a working sample using different sounds. It is a very precise selection using the Ch # 5 bind button on all RCS Tx hand-pieces.

Also usable with stick radios.
