New Freight Cars on the TFT&W

So the enforced time spent on the indoor layout has not only resulted in work done on the physical plant of the railroad, there has been construction of new rolling stock as well. First up is a Type1a boxcar.

Its basicallu a copy of the stock commercial model made by Bachmann:

I actually started this rolling stock spree a while back by assembling the basic box carbody and frame from styrene sheet, I even was nice enough to engineer a jig for bending office staples into grab irons, a a drilling template for mounting the grabs to use on this reefer

It too started as a copy of the Bachmann basic box, but I added and refined a few details that I think makes it look even better

Sweet! Have any in process pics?

Bart… Beautiful looking freightcars…

Nice work Bart. Looks like a good start on a fleet.

Good thing you’re a youngin’ and still have good eyes to be able to see the holes to stick those staple grabs into :o Looks great.

Not of these…but since I’ve got 5 more to build…it can be arranged…you asked for it… The cars start out like this…a simple box an roof made from scribed siding material…

Yes…the frame is really that simple…now add a bit of weight from steel stock…

While thats drying, I add a little trim from strip styrene…

My painfully exactly crafted drilling guide with high tech fastening system…

And the results of using said futuristic technology…

I like

Darn Real World stuff keeps biting into my railroading time…but have managed to squeeze in some time to do some detailing…thats the wonderful thing about working in styrene, the magic of makin’ stuff with various bits…

I found a great deal on the Bachmann 2 bay so the roster got heavy by 4…yeah they’re gonna get painted eventually, but now I don;t have to rush to build a set of three bay hoppers just in order to have a decent operating session…
