NEW flag stuck on post

Hi Bob,

No matter what I seem to do, the post http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=6242 is always flagged as new. I tried marking all posts read in that forum, but got an error page after a long wait. It’s not unusual for ‘mark all read’ to take a very long time. I usually open and scroll posts to clear the flag since it’s usually faster.

Not a big deal. Just thought you would like to know.

I thought there was a similar problem with the Live Steam forum, but it cleared itself after multiple openings of the same new post.

Hope you had a enjoyable Father’s Day. See you in Canada?

Jon

UM - Never mind.

As soon as I made this post and went back to the Index, the flag cleared.

Just a sticky bit I suppose.

Jon

Clear your cache

Or better yet, send ME your cash…

What? cache? Oh, nevermind.

If I have any Crappy Tire Money left over from the Invasion, I’ll send it to you

JR

P.S. I really dislike clearing my cache. I do it only when absolutely necessary 'cause it screws up all the logins to the websites I frequent and stay logged in to.

The flag seems to be OK now and Timmy was probably right - problem was on my end.

Clearing your cookies may screw up your logins on other website but not necessarily clearing your cache. Clearing your cache will clear the locally stored version of the page.

I have found the flag will stay if you have not entered a page, since it was modified. If the latest update is on page 3 and you did not go back to page 2, if somebody modified anything on page 2, it will stay flagged as new.
I’ve got caught with this a few times, but mostly it is because of my constant use of the back key. I’ve slapped my hand with a ruler, but I still do it.

Timmy -

Could you explain exactly how to do that in IE? I know of three options; Page Refresh (toolbar button), Delete Cookies, and Delete Files (both Tools/Internet Options)

Where exactly do you find Clear Cache ?

I actually just finished entering the complete steps but the website barfed when submitting, kicked me out and then required a second time to login… This has happened 3 times trying to post a response which is indicating a website problem.

so…without going through the complete process again. Instead of TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS / DELETE FILES…
Select TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS / SETTINGS / VIEW FILES / EDIT SELECT ALL / DELETE

Thanks Timmy - Those instructions are clear enough for me.

I know your trying to help, and partially I’m just bustin’ your chops, but HTF do you guys get Clear Cache out of that??? Sure, that folder might technically be the cache, but HSM; how is anyone that’s not technically oriented going to figure that out?

Just so ya know; I’ve been using personal computers since you had to write your own code for Z-80’s and store it on cassette tape. My friends wrote machine language in binary directly into a simple PC using 8 on/off switches and an enter button as the keyboard. I’ve done tech support and am currently the IT Director for a real estate developer. Not saying I know more than you; just that I’m familiar with this stuff.

Back to your instructions - I followed them and got a warning wanting to know if I was sure I wanted to delete the cookies. I said no, because that’s one of the reasons I resist this quick fix unless nothing else works. Log-ins to many of the sites I use for work are kept in cookies, and I effen hate looking up logins in a book.

Thanks for putting up with my BS.

He Mikey - Did ya get all those acronyms? I mighta made a few up :o

JR

Oh yeah - You read the “never mind” in the second message, right? The problem went away and I think Ric actually figured out the cause. I was opening only the last page and someone edited a post on a previous page.

Yup… I saw the “never mind”… the page was cached

Clearing the cache, empty the cache, dumping the cache are both common terms in the industry and computer world. If you are dead set on not including the dumping (clearing) your cookies along with your cache then the next best thing to do is to:

  • Open the Browser (it’s actually best to not open the browser to do this but rather to right click on the IE desktop icon with the browser closed. However a number of people either delete the IE icon from the desktop. Or, after deleting it put it back as a shortcut so you can’t right click on it to preform this function. Thus, the instructions here are with the browser open)
  • Click TOOLs
  • Click INTERNET OPTIONS
  • Click the DELETE FILES button
  • Put a check mark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT
  • Click OK
  • Click OK

As I am sure you are aware as you are the techy type as you say, that not clearing your cookies as well periodically also opens the door and leaves you prone to Spyware, Malware etc. I am guessing then that you must have a “ton” of logins that you must remember in order to not wanting to delete your cookies. I also have a ton of logins. However, I delete my cookies and clear my cache on a regular basis… sometimes multiple times a day.

NP on the BS

PS: the website also barfed on me when attempting to reply to this post, which kicked me out and required that I relog back in. It has been doing that lately. Bob should take a look at that.

Of course the website kicked you out, it uses a cookie to store your login.

Forums often use cookies to keep track of what threads are old and which are new (to you).

I agree about clearing your files every so often. And yes, cookies can be bad, if they are the type that are tracking you and sites use to get information for them to sell.

Just deleting all cookies will normally clear everything, the good with the bad.

I’d suggest downloading ad-aware from www.download.com … it will identify cookies enough that you can delete the ones you do not want, but not touching the ones that make it convenient to log into your favorite sites, and the ones that let you know which threads you have not read.

It’s free…

Of course it would kick you out if you cleared your cookies. However, that is not the case here. The site has started doing this recently after logging in and reading/responding to posts kicks you out. No cookie clearing… just kicks you out.

Yup, deleting your cookies does just that… deletes all your cookies.

Yes, Ad-Aware SE is very good… and free. So is SpyBot Search & Destroy (also free). If one has not run one of these or similar applications I highly suggest doing so… you will be amazed at what it finds.

I must confess puzzlement here (again ) . I don’t get kicked off , I answer the post , then having waited for the proof to show , I select "Forum Index " and carry on through . Or am I just lucky to have got away with
something ?
Mike M
later edit --.Yes , I thought so , it not only returns me to the general forum , it deletes the "new " flags on the ones I’ve read .

Kicks out of forum? Strange. On thing I have noticed that, at least here in San Diego, response of the forum is slow. (All other sites are normal speed, and I do understand computers).

One thing it could be is that the response of the forum is slow enough to your location that you get a timeout, or no ack from your post, and the web server gets confused, or thinks you are gone.
