I set up a temporary track around the, currently, empty fish pond today. Friends were bringing their grandkid, who wanted to see the trains run. I gave him a chance to run them.

He did fine. As long as he could pay attention. Too much energy to stand still for too long. He figured out starting and stopping and speed. He figured out bells, whistles, and other noises.
How does the saying go? ‘You want to know what the remote control unit does, just turn it over to a kid for a few minutes.’
Being able to participate does indeed help to draw interest.
