New Direction to 1/20n3

After giving my 1/17n30 venture attention for several months I’ve opted to shift gears to 1/20n3. This has required altering the Bachmann conversion I was working on. This was simply done by building a new, smaller cab and cutting down the height of the side tanks. The following two photos shows the 17n30 version followed by the 20n3 version.

I shot gray primer on the lokie this morning during a spare moment of downtime.

Hi Dwayne,

Nice work, both your lokies look great. Do you plan on cleaning the primer off the flanges and valve gear?

No need since it has RC/battery power. Final paint of course will be black with eventual weathering touches. Just to clarify the pics are all of the same engine. The top photo is the 1/17n30 rendition with a larger cab while the second is the 1/20n3 version with a smaller cab.

That is going to look nice.

Looking good Dwayne. Amazing what a little primer can do to bring something together.

Even with the downsizing it still looks great Dwayne. Nice work.

Thanks gentlemen.

Looks good. Do you happen to know what was the purpose of the steel drum? I’m guessing it was a fuel tank.

Don't know Ray but if I was proprietor of that line I would fill it with a beverage for the crew at the end of the day! Actually as a smart business man......... at the end of the week...run it up and down the line for a week with them knowing what's inside should get the employee moral moving! :)

It’s an oil barrel fuel tank. Originally I had it set up fore to aft as shown in the following pic on the 1/17n30 version…

In the change over to 1/20n3 I rotated it 90°…

The inspiration for this idea is this photo I found on another forum…

Hey folks. Been awhile since I’ve posted anything on my lil’ lokie. This evening I gave it a coat of flat black rattle can paint to get it to the stage of saying it’s complete. I know it’s not highly detailed and lacks any sort of weathering, but since I am a follower of the “10 foot rule”, it’s good enough for me for now.

Dwayne,
Very cool and unique little loco.
Ralph

THAT, Sir, is looking VERY good.

I’ve a mind to do the same to an ‘Otto’ I bought for $25.

I have a v.fine Banta Shay cab looking for a good home…

I love it. That is very cool.

Very nice work. I’d love to see a picture of it outside.

Have you thought about a fireman and engineer?

Thanks everyone. I learned a lot with this first LS kitbash/scratchbuild that I hope to apply towards the next lokie.

I would too. Unfortunately I don’t have a layout of any sort. I’ve recently moved to a small apartment a few months ago which pretty much nixes the idea of having any layout. Being that it’s RC/battery powered I can run it across the floor without track. But that’s okay, I still enjoy spending time just creating and building. I’ve got an engineer or two somewhere. Just gotta find him.

Sounds like it’s time to build a switching layout! Or, at least make a display track and take some outside pictures.

Any clubs in the area? Where in OK are you? I lived in Lawton for a bit last century. Of course that was back in my HO days.

Nothing like an outside shot to really show off that fine modeling.
