New diesel the In-ko-pah RR!

Today we discovered a Christmas gift from Cris’ brother, which had been hidden in the grandkids’ playhouse by the UPS guy. Apparently it was raining on the day they delivered the package.

Inside the box was a new Aristocraft RS-3 diesel locomotive. It’s a real beauty, with great detail. I ran it this evening and it performs very well. Lots of pulling power, and runs smoother and slower than anything else I have. Handles the tight curves fine too, with one exception.

There is one spot on the lower level, west end, where it likes to climb the outside rail. Since it only happens there, the problem is with the track rather than the loco. Most likely the track is slightly out of gauge there. Shouldn’t be difficult to correct.

Although it’s quite long, at 1:29 scale it’s small even next to my 1:24 stuff, and the Buddy L 2-6-2 towers over it. Eventually I will probably try to “upscale” it with a larger cab and other modifications.

I have a Christmas RS-3 and love it. I am thinking about getting one I can run the rest of the year.

That’s a pretty nice gift. My RS-3 was my first diesel and still my favorite. It won’t take much to upscale it a bit.

Went to a ““Toy Truck & Construction Equipment”” convention, a couple of years ago…

They had one room, that had a 1/16th scale floor layout for operating the trucks on, and around… The one other feature of the floor layout, was G-scale tracks and a Bachmann 44 toner, that they scaled up to represent 1/16th, simply by raising the cab, approximately one inch…

Looked like the just lifted the cab up and put a one inch high piece, under the cab, then set the cab back on… It actually looked good…

Oh No - Dieselization. It Can’t be true!!! I love my RS-3’s. Got 3 of 'em. Just remember, it’s only allowed to pull the work train!

Alas, Requires 5 foot curves. Leaves me out. Ray, that sure was a cool belated Christmas surprise. Ralph

it’s the One Diesel I’d love to have! last page of GR sometime over the last year or so was a photo of a Up-sized cab RS-3…I’ll look to find it!

Ralph, that’s five foot diameter, not radius.

The RS-3 runs fine on 5 foot diameter or even tighter curves. You may have to remove the centering spring on the coupler. That allows the coupler to swing freely and not pull your rolling stock off the track on a tight curve.

I ran my RS on 4 foot curves and it worked fine. I was only pulling three cars tho.

Excellent. This is good news. The Aristocraft catalog states a 5 foot minimum. I'd like to have one myself. Ralph

I fixed the one section of track where the loco was derailing. Turns out the curve was super-elevated a bit too much, causing the train to lean towards the inside of the curve. Then the wheels would lift up and climb the outside rail. So I just dug out some of the ballast from under the track and got it to lay flatter.

Here are some pics of the new loco:

Great pictures Ray.

A little redecoration into SP / SDA&E style dress, and you have a So. California diesel powered desert shortline or bridge RR!

Great pix, great scenery!

Happy RRing,
