New Centipede Tender Build

As you may recall, I made a Challenger a couple of years back, with a centipede tender. I worked from photos, but got off on the tender and once I finally got plans I discovered my observing it on the track was right and it was too big, plus pretty heavy. So I started over, using the plans and made some wood bulkheads and covered them with 1/32nd plywood. Decided to use an used printing plate for the metal sides. I embossed it with rivet patterns, looking at my photographs.

I used thinner craft foil for the front and back, so I could get more detail in, the printing plate was sorta thick, but added strength. I used 3M spray adhesive to attach it to the plywood. I used 3M tube tack and trim adhesive for the front and back. Nasty fumes, so use outside! I am reusing the USA Big Boy front trucks as I did on the old one, and the centipede side frames that I made from scratch.

I added the tool boxes and covered them with metal duct tape that I had embossed.

This is coming out a lot smoother and lighter than the old one.

sharp build there Jerry. I do like the way you use metal where possible

Jerry,
You’re the King of duct tape and tin foil. Fine models you’re building.
Ralph

Looking good!

…grinning…

Looking good. The metal idea is great. Nice work as always

Jerry,

You are one clever fellow. That looks great!

Holy Cow, that’s cool Jerry. Can’t wait to see more progress.
Dave

Thanks guys. I got some paint on it(Krylon Satin Black). Trial fit of the pivoting front tender trucks(Used USA Big Boy ones). The side frames I made for the early Challenger tender will fit on, have to trim them just a little. Speaker is installed inside also. I got the rear top piece on, may make it an oil burner so I just have a hatch to remove that does not have coal pieces on it. Will be on hiatus till after Marty’s.

Just about done with the tender. I decided to make it an oil burner, glued on coal kept flaking off and there was no good handle to lift it out to get inside. This comes off real easily.

Top overall view. I used small cotter pins and brass wire for the railings. A few Ozark pieces on the piping.

I still need to do the rear lights and wait for my wife to cut some vinyl lettering(she used to have a sign business). Now that it is about finished I think I will miss working on it. Should start on 844 soon though.

So, is this going to be lettered for the SP&S or the NP? :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s looking real good!

Steve, it will have UP letering. I’ll use it with the Challenger I made and with 844, hope to finally get going on that THIS winter, was to be last winter, but never got to it. Knew I wanted a new tender, so finally did that. Tools I use for the ‘rivet’ patterns are a old leather tool for the big ones and a pounce wheel for the small ones. You can get a set of pounce wheels from Micro Mark. The larger type wheels you can get at leather/craft stores. Sewing stores have something similar, I believe.

Looks real good Jerry! Pardon my ignorance but what is "printing plate"?

Just the aluminum printing plates that small newspaper’s/printers use. They are sort of dying out, but if you check with a small town newspaper, you will probably find someone around that still has them. I was in Abilene, Kansas a couple of years ago and noticed in the local paper that they sold their old printing plates, about a buck apiece I think. Local paper here used to have them, but I think they use a different printer now.

Don’t need any…was just looking for an answer and that is what I thought you meant but wasn’t sure.
Thanks
