Large Scale Central

New building

A new building is under construction on the Dirty and Dusty.

Because of my poor eyesight I follow my trains closely and consequently I’m setting up all my switches so the power can be turned off in case someone else is running. Consequently I’m putting the switches in buildings.

Since I have a southwestern mining layout and I want buildings that will hold up to hard use what do I build? Why, an adobe.

Here’s the first step. The “adobe” comes next.

I think Bob is still working on the servers! I’ll have the picture later. It uploaded nicely.

Remove the space in the file name…

Thanks Bob. It will sure be nice when Macs and PCs can play nice!

And here’s the building.

Nice!

Looks just like a typical Southwestern adobe structure. Colors are perfect.

Nice! Are you going to have any ceiling timbers sticking out near the top of the walls?

Looks good Doug. Really nice color too! The ol’ original jail in Port Orford wasn’t much larger than that. All you’d need are some bars in the window and maybe some strap iron hinges on the door. Neat!!!

I have to build a number and a jail is a thought.

I was using a Jigstones mold and I left some gaps at the top for “timbers.”

With any luck I’ll get some “adobe” on the outside of the building today which will change the color. I too liked that color but now I have to cover it up!

I have a slightly larger one that will be an assay office in town.

The building got its “adobe” and a coat of paint. Now its time for frames, doors and windows.

Two “adobes” are nearly ready to be placed on the layout. The first is an assay office which still lacks a sign. The second is a “switch station” for one of the sidings. Soon you should see two pictures !

They look great. They will loooke nice on your desert layout.

Nice. Looking forward to seeing them in place

Doug, it looks like you are modelling a italo-western layout!
you will need a guy or two with biiig sombreros sitting against the walls.

do you have a pic, that shows how you made the roofs?

I didn’t but I can describe it.

Jigstones are made with little blocks that connect them. I used half blocks on each side and left an opening that I cut wood “beams” that slide across. Atop that I put 1/8-inch hardwood plywood and sealed it with lap cement that is used with roll roofing.

On one of them I left a small opening at the back where rain could drain off. Normally we wouldn’t need it but we are currently on our fifth day of rain and if they were outside they’d need it!

Is it done yet?

It was too cold to work in the shop today and never stopped raining either! And The weather service says it’s Hawaii’s fault!

I understand!

I think I need to email Noah and reserve a place!
