I have a engine and tender and they light up, but the engine don’t move. I only a forward and reverse transformer. Do I need the fancy controller that come with the set? It’s just to run around the tree.

Yes. It is a type of DCC. Not sure if all the details but I have the same one and you need the other components. Go to BBB the last post.
There are 3 pieces you need. The hand controller, the box that it plugs into and slips in the track and the power transformer.
I was just looking at that one on Ebay. 
My wife said I could use her card. 
I hooked up my other New Bright engine and it could hardly pull the Christmas cars.

If you watch my video, it shows all the cars except one (gandy dancer) which I forgot to get out.
That’s cool my wife and grand kids will love it. I just ordered the controller on eBay. She may be looking for more cars after she sees the video. I will show her your store on eBay.

That is not my eBay store. I don’t do eBay, except to buy that video was my train I got back in the 90’s when my kids were young.
