Large Scale Central

New boxcab 1:20 scale

Here are a couple pics of my new boxcab I scratchbuilt. Garden Railways has accepted an article which outlines the build. I’m not quite sure when it will be published. As you can see I’ve done it two ways, internal combustion power and electric power. Its based on a small USAT power truck and is battery powered. Right now it is free running with a 5 cell Nimh pack and an on/off direction switch but it can be RC’ed with no trouble at all. I used metal, plastic and artist mat board for the construction. Dave

Cool!!! I dig it!

Looks good. I always wondered what was the purpose for a boxcab?

Dave, Very nice loco. I studied the photos and am curious …to go from trolley pole to gas loco do you just swap out the roof details?

Shawn, Small locos like these, nicknamed critters, are used for light switching chores or for areas of tight clearance where a big loco wouldnt be able to negotiate tight curves.Cabs were configured as box type ,center cab, or end cab.

Dave,
Thanks. Originally I swapped out the roof details and that’s the way it appears in the article. Two screws hold the IC stuff in place. The traction deck covers the area where the IC stuff is so just one screw is needed to hold it place.
I have since made a second roof so all I have to do is swap the roof to go from one to the other.
It was a fun build and I just like watching it trundle around towing a car or two.

Dave ,thanks for the inspiration. Now I know what to do with that USA power truck thats been floating around the shop!!

Yea,
I’ve got the bug to try something in 7/8 scale so I’m digging around for either another power truck or one of the old Bachmann 0-4-0 side tank switchers. I’ve done a couple of them into 1:24 scale 2-4-0’s and they run great.

I thought that one of them would make a good chassis for some of those little 0-2-0 2 footers.
The USA power trucks run great and I did a critter in 1:20 using a power truck from a the big Bachmann center cab.

BTW I really like the Dunkirk.

A well-trundling little critter and a cool beverage at the end of a day is all a true model railroadman really needs to be happy. :)
