New Avatar

I changed avatar today. The picture shows three LNER A4 class locomotives.

The one (green livery) nearest is loco Dwight D. Eisenhower 60008 (ex LNER 4496) and will return to Green Bay WI soon.

The middle loco is Mallard (World Record holder of 126 mph**) blue LNER livery No. 4468 (60008)

The further one is Dominion of Canada LNER blue 4489 (60010) due to return to Quebec with DDE.

There are six of these locos preserved, three of them are runners. The two ex pats are not.

It has been great to see these locos on our shores and I was fortunate to get to see them in October last.

** I know some American locos, particularly those of the Milwaukee Road, ran at very high speeds (for steam locos) but those speeds were not, as far as I know recorded. but just part of the usual daily operations.

Alan,

Where are those being displayed, York?

National Railway Museum, York UK

A big write-up about the logistics etc. in “Canadian Rail” (the magazine of Canada’s railway history) Nov/Dec 2013 issue.

I changed my avatar too!

Has been noticed. Is it to explore the Mariana Trench? supposedly the deepest canyon on earth and filled right to the top.

Is that the place they spotted giant eels recently HJ?

As this is an international Forum I felt it good to show locos of the principal three Countries that have Members here.

Yes. I know some of you live elsewhere but there isn’t space and you don’t have any A4 locos.

Yes Alan, that’s the one.

BTW changing an avatar is a life changing event that needs to be well considered. That’s why I keep my happy grinning face on LSC.

The National Railway Museum was a wonderful place to visit as was the city itself. Must be even better by now I haven’t been there since the mid 80’s.

And to keep on subject, yes, avatars are very important, that’s why I leave mine undisturbed.
