Large Scale Central

New Arrival

Shawn - I made an even dozen skeleton log cars using the simple plans in a back-issue of GR. By batch building in rows I found that I could make the whole lot in less than a week of evenings. Earlier that week at a train show I gotten ahold of a bag of old Bachmann arch-bar trucks, and found that there were only 23 in it. Just as I was walking away the seller shouted to me - 'Hey, here’s another one!!

It was fate, I tell ya.

Ken were those from GR plans? They look almost like the bachmann except longer.

Skeleton cars are something I’d like to build some day too. The wood pieces are very simple shapes. I need some trucks and something to use for the straps.

check the Photo Gallery for a few more shots of these in Brevard NC…located in 1:20 folder edit: I think Mik built some from these photos a year or so ago?

Nice cars Cale. Check out how close the wheel is to the frame - they’re gonna need really wide curves

For the metal straps im just using styrene . It bends easily and with a little paint and weathering they will look like metal. I might also experiment with cuting stipes from rusty metal and use that. Ill have to see what works better.

Ken as for the plans im using the Bachmann log cars I have and copying them. Thanks though.

Jon,

I am working on a set of skeleton cars off the GR plans. I am using USA arch bar trucks I bought from Robbie at RLD Hobbies, and 24mm Bachmann wheel sets. For the strapping and angles parts I am cutting up old computer power supply cases. The thin steel looks better IMHO than the heavier brass section it would take to have the same durability.

My tuppence worth.

Cale, closer to two years…

They’re 5/16" square basswood with 1/4" uprights I think I’ve actually run them twice. real logs make them pretty heavy.

I just used some strips cut from a piece of flashing for the metal straps. Used a couple nails to hold’em on…

Those are good looking cars. A major investment in trucks! Whose did you use?

Thanks Bob. I have access to a wide variety of material scrap at work. Just need to realize that I can make such things with material I can get free.

Those came out nice Mik. You need to add a logging operation to your outdoor layout. then you have an excuse to use them more. Plus they look great with that engine.

Have you not watched my builds? ;)

Jon,

Comes from the life of a scrounge. Never throw anything away that might have use later.

So, with the candles, is that like the altar to G?

If nothing else it will annoy the crap out of your heirs when they have to wade through 20 tons of crap to find the 'good stuff' that they can sell......

Thanks, unfortunately that engine is leaving for a new home in Eastern Pa. tomorrow. I may build another one someday. I'd sell you those cars, though. Make me a reasonable offer. ;)

Leftovers from Kim's Christmas decorations of 3 years ago.... We DID light them whenever the power went out. So maybe it was an altar to Nikola Tesla?

You can get Climax side frames from Ozark, just have to email him about them.

:D

Which brings to mind, from the sig line “and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality.” sometimes seems to apply to the checkbook too
