Never-wuz SD45-2W

I really like the brutish look of the long hood of the SD45. Ive modified one Aristo SD45 to more accurately reflect the engine number that it represents (See my Guilford #681 thread). But I found my self with another one, and, since I didn’t want another high-nose SD45, I ordered one of PMIs CN safety cab conversions from Robby at RLD.

The cab had quite a bit of flash on it, especially the window openings (the flash was VERY thick, and required careful drilling and filing to not break the areas between the windows), but it cleaned up well. I had to enlarge the opening for the longhood about 1/16 each way wide, and about 3/8 in height. But, the test fit looks pretty good.

I wouldn’t know the difference, looks OK to me…

good start

Looks good, Ive been working slowly as time permit’s to add one to a gp38. Ive paused a bit after seeing a thread on another site from Keith on a SD-40-2 Ive thinking of adding it to one of them instead.

Thanks Bob for this thread I was wondering about this product that was mentioned elsewhere {i think it was the one NS mentiond}, what it contained, and how well it ‘worked’ !!

Nick;

csx side shot … is that a (side window) example of how much flashing there is still left to remove ? yeeech but i guess either that or more $$$ for sweat shop labour to remove previous to pkging !

glazing/windows ?

in that side bag of cabinets !?

thanks again

Bob,

Interesting approach. You could submit your idea to NS as future rebuild projects.

Have you seen the Admiral Cabs that NS has been making for a few years and putting on rebuilds? You idea is just another step in that direction!

Here’s a high hood SD40-2 getting a makeover.

Doug No , If you look real close that’s just the window opening on the other side of the cab. These really are a great value at 49.99 but i’m not sure if the manufacture is making them anymore because there not listed on there site now. Robby might still have some in stock.

I bought that cab a while back too. Mine is very thin with thin flashing that came right off. Some air bubble holes that need to be fixed. I was going to make a CN rebuild unit.
I would prefer a cab like this NS one. Very modern looking. I may hold off and try to emulate this one.

Anyone that is interested in the Admiral cab, you can go to the Altoona Works website and grab drawings.

Bob,

Seems as though like you I was lucky to get one of these. As Ive been told this company went belly up recently. This sucks for us G gaugers, but no fret. AML is on the way.

I like this one.

That’s a great link. Thanks Bob! Cool to see those cabs laying around!

Noooooooooooooooo!!! leave it a high nose!

Very nice conversion, Bob…

That’s what so much fun about this hobby… We can do what we want for our own pleasure and have fun with it…

And I thought this was about the new Star Wars movie

That’s a nice conversion. Is it done yet.

Cab still needs some filing, and the big metal channel on the chassis needs some grinding, as it JUST interferes with the cab sitting flush.

I just found a piece of styrene diamond plate that looks right, so Ill use that for the walkway in front of the cab. And Ill be adding some resin to the inside corners of the cab to provide some purchase for attachment screws.

Thats the “open air” model.

I was thinking the same but he does have 681 still!

I have aquired a high hood fetish myself

I have a use for that old SD-45 cab - -

Put it on a SD-70 MAC for an instant SD-50 or SD-60. Just swap the cab and change a few doors on the sides. I’m doing that as my project .I’m almost done with this, just need to

re-locate the ditch lights below the deck and put the handrails on.

Can’t figure outout how to insert my pic but I’ll keep trying
