Large Scale Central

Never seen this before

I gotta get a picture.

My wife’s on a trip, son came by this morning and we yarded the 3/4 race 50 Merc outta the Willys.

Making a horrible noise.

Six hours later we had it out, apart, Willys pushed back outside and all parts loaded in the Ugly Truckling.

Last summer it developed a rod knock (not common in a Flatmotor at all).
I pulled the pan, and #8 was gone.
Replaced the bearings, ran it until a month or two ago when it started again.

Forged Mercury Crank came out in two pieces.
Right through #8 throw.

Never seen that in a street engine.
Saw a picture of one that let go at Bonneville 60 years or more ago, but never seen this, and I’ve been doing Flatheads for over 40 years…

Dave…

Time for a change…go Hybrid…a small one cylinder gasoline engine, and a generator…electric drive from a battery…be the first on your block…!!!

Or…go for the first replica of a Stanley Steamer…be ahead of the future…!!!

In eather case; make sure there is a workable cigar lighter on the dash board, next to the buggy whip…

I’m sticking with my tricycle…the one with the large basket behind the seat, and my Sears 22hp lawn tractor, without the mower. They get me to the local place for holy water, and the post office…now and again they even get me to the cigar store to pick up a cigar, to have in stock, in case you drop in…!!!

A few years ago I had a Vauxhall Astra diesel, a Brit 1.7 litre 4 leg job - it had a terrible bottom end rattle, after 260,000, so stripped it - crank was broken thru a journal pin…it was still running!!!

I was amazed it ran at all.

neil.

He lives in a Yuppy neighborhood. He is about the LAST one without a Hybrid.

and no japcrap in my driveway, either

I recall about 25 or so years ago, folks I knew wanted to get into something “economical”.

Had a clapped out Chevy LUV pickup, motor fried.

They had this Mother Earth catalog, they bought some 400 cylce jet starter motors and generators, a Briggs engine, we made an adaptor to go on the front of the bell housing for the motor, hook the generator to the Briggs, fill the box with batteries…

The only real problem was the controller at the time.
I gave up, they hauled it home.

Probably still out there running someplace…

Dave, I will cut you a heck of a deal on my Chev PU. You have seen it in it’s “Pre” stage. Now imagine it as a compact. It was compacted Friday at 4pm by the mall in Lake Forest Park. Spent Friday in ER, Sat and Sun on drugs and today on the phone with several insurance companies.

…Sears has their Tractor sale about this time every year…!!!

…If you like driving a lawntractor… My 9yo Sears Craftsman Tractor.

Siderods clear the deck without problems. Train attachments are removed with six bolts in ten minutes for mowing. Usually, bubbles blow out the smokestack, but the batteries ran down before the pictures were taken. We were celebrating grand daughter’s 5th birthday. …Got a lot of fun looks when we drove into the local Wendy’s for Frostys. JimC.

Yeah…but Our Wendys staff are the dregs of the fast food work force…they always get strange looks when they screw up yer order…

…I still say that the “Mower Deck” has to go…!!!

Dave,
Ya got any pictures of the Willys?

Unfortunately Fred........some of us actually have grass to mow! And the mowers aren;t relegated to mass transit and terrorizing the neighborhood

…mowing grass…hmmmmmm

…interesting concept…is it worth it…? It seems to grow faster when you mow it; or is there some reason these neigbours have to mow every week…while I seem to be able to manage with mowing about once a month…of course, I don’t waste water, on it, or feed the ruddy grass…and NO Chemicals, to kill the birds or animules…

I usually haul the trailer around the neigbourhood, equipped with several seats and a cooler of bheer.....seeking local ladies who would like a comfortable tour of local sights......

…interesting to see who jumps aboard…even without the mower deck…!!!

To Dave,
Sorry this post got pirated away from your original thread about the Willys. I really would like to see photos of the Willys. At one time I almost bought one with a hemi stuffed under the hood to take to the Drag Races [back in another lifetime].
