Just got back from our town’s parade. Thanked the two veterans I crossed paths with (one Marine, one navy officer)
Today I always think of the parent of one of my childhood friends. He and I got talking one night, when I was maybe 12, at a boy scout camping trip. He was a waist gunner on a B-17 durning WWII, and I had just built a model of one. Told me a couple stories. Over the next few years, he and I would talk occasionally and I’d listen to more of his stories.
Years later when he passed away, his wife told me that he NEVER talked about his experiences until he and I started talking.
