Large Scale Central

Need plans for a flatcar

This winter I plan to start making all my rolling stock from scratch. Im looking for a decent set of plans for 1:22 scale wooded flat cars. My plan is take make most of my rolling stock from one flatcar plan. That way I can make one Jig for the flat car and build the rest from there. I want narrow guage look and something to fit late 1800 to early 1900’s and all wood frames.

sumthin like this?

Go sit in the corner…

Thanks Ken. I owe you.
Rooster that would take up my entire layout Lol.

Flat cars are fun and easy. Here’s a link to a scratch built flat I made a fey years ago. It has some plans too, but they are 1:20.3 http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=10358

I just procured some redwood 4x4 scraps from work and plan on making another to revive my Tank-on-Flat project.

Those old GR plans are about that scale.

I like that idea; it gives all your cars a 'family resemblance' too. Same length/width and truck spacing.

Most of my 1:20.3 scratch stuff rides on Bachmann flats…May be a bit of a ‘cheat’ but it sure saves time!
(I should really get back to that caboose…)

Thanks Kens. Its a shame GR doesnt have the pullout plans anymore. They had some good ones.

Shawn - I have lots of plans that you can use. Will have to come take a ride down and see what you may like to model. I also have most of the GR pullouts.

I used some plans, more or less, to build this 30 foot flat car in 1:20.3.

The plans are in PDF format and I do not know how to attach them to these posts. Anybody got ideas on how to get a PDF hooked on to these messages??? Tom

Shawn,
Have you looked at Kevin Strong’s work. He models in the same era you are talking about. Good stuff on his site. and trying to say this without slighting any one else’s work.

Kem, do you know when those plans were published? I need to get a set to use for this project.

These water cars were actually built on 30’6" Pacific Electric flatcars and I plan to build four of them I am currently collecting information and pictures for the project.

The flat car plans I sent to Shawn came in the Sept/Oct 1993 edition. They ran almost up until Kalmbach took them over and changed the format.

May/June 1995 had Tank car plans. They’re are still some available in PDF file on the GR website(or if you want a set, I can make a copy and mail’em;;;;))

For some reason thus picture won't upload!
Yea, it needs an extension, like jpg, gif, etc.............

Shawn,
Years ago Wayne Spence did a scratch built flat car on mls. This was to be a base for a series of cars, box, reffer, high & low sided gondolas, tank, ect ect. He drew up plans and a material list. I have a copy if your interested. The car I beleive is a 120.3 30ft DRG flat.

Chuck

These are the plans that Wayne did. http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/thejoat/RollingStock/mlscarshopsflatcar.pdf

They ARE in 1:20. But, dimensions are metric, so it would be pretty easy to reduce to 1:22.5

BTW, you CAN make these “wooden” flat cars out of styrene if you like. That’s what I did when I was following along on the build. I just used a razor saw to put in a grain.

Once painted, it would be hard to tell the difference.
