Need Paint Removal from LGB Plastic

Hi all Its still amazing what you can get on Ebay for $11 bucks these days…

Man everyone must have been busy watching Dancing with the Stars when these were up, I put in a much higher bid but lo and behold at the end , I had them for a sawbuck and some change, full bodys w/ interior on the coach, dam! No chassis, but I can build them! After looking at them I saw why they may have been so cheap, they’ve been repainted but the paint didnt take, it crazed real badly

So OK now I’ll have to strip them before I can paint them Borracho Blue like my Delton combine I want to strip them down to the plastic so I can re-prime them, so… ANY ONE GOT ANY BEST SUGGESTIONS???

Might be time for the old brake fluid bath.

…and how does one do that? My turn to be lurned!

Either soak or wipe on auto brake fluid to remove the paint. Has been known to cause cracking in Aristo plastic so it could be a bit risky.

You could also try soaking them in about 1 inch of “Fantastic” for about 24 hours, laying them on their side.

The Luran plastic LGB uses is pretty much ‘everything proof,’ meaning it won’t be damaged by things like brake fluid, paint strippers or other chemicals. I would start either with Brians suggested brake fluid bath, or with a commercial paint stripper. There are several choices available at any home improvement or paint store.

Repainting the is somewhat more of a problem, as the Luran plastic also is resistant to virtually all known paints. The LGB skips I repainted using Krylon from a rattle can have lasted more than 5 years, mostly sitting on an outdoor siding, but the now need re-coating. The paint has flaked off in a variety of places, especially inside the tub where the load goes. I’m not certain if I will strip them and completely repaint, of just sand the existing paint and paint over it. Since they’re industrial equipment, paint flaws aren’t on a particular concern.

Happy RRing,

Thanks guys, I’m going to try denatured alcohol to start, which was mentioned on the other site, I have reservations about brake fluid as it can be a headache to dispose of clean up materials. I can also use the alcohol to clean my airbrush.

We’ll see what happens

Tho off topic and asked a million times before…

What’s an easy way to remove lettering and logos from LGB cars?

JB

for lettering I use Eagle One “Nevr Dull”, that and elbow grease does an excellent job.

Paint: very fine wet-paper with rubbing alcohol as solvent.
