Large Scale Central

need measurements

i am stuck with my planning for locos and rolling stock.

i need to know, how wide they are in the smaller largescales.

specially in 1:29 and in 1:32.

for both scales i would like to know, how wide are (oldfashioned) passenger cars - outside of the car’s walls and the roof from edge to edge.

and for steam locos the same. cabin and roof.

i hope, there is somebody, who has not stowed away all rolling stock for the winter.

What specific cars and locos are you looking for?

I might be able to help.

Best for 2016!

to you and yours as well!

you know that i can’t count to more than three, so no rivetcounting on my layout.

the idea is, to slaughter all my stainzes, and build them up again in a smaller scale. to give them a somewhat wild-westish appearence. (to remind optically of the General… i’m a great fan of Mr. Keaton)

i’ll have to experiment, if i’ll convert them to 2-4-0s, or to 4-4-0s.

i know, the Stainz drivers are a bit smallish for that, but, maybe, using O scale wheels up front, i might catch the wild west feeling.

so, my preoccupation at the moment is, how slim can i make the stainzes? and how broad can i go in 1:29 or 1:32, without getting the look of the trans siberian wide gauge trains?

in short: i haven’t got the slightest idea, what i am actually looking for.

Well, most rolling stock was, at maximum, 10 feet wide. So in 1:32nd scale that’s a maximum of 3.75 inches, in 1:29 scale its a maximum of 4.1379 inches. Now older rolling stock could be narrower, 9 to 9.5 feet wide.

9 feet would be, 3.375 in 1:32nd, 3.7241 in 1:29thn scale

9.5 feet would be 3.5625 in 1:32nd and 3.931 in 1:29th scale.

Most clearances stated in printed references, are that you want 2 inches outside of the rails. So with 2 inches on each side of the rails, and 1.75 inches for the rails, that works out to a right of way of 5.75 inches wide. That is for straight track, curves need a bit more for overhang and under-hang especially on long cars. And of course narrow gauge equipment may need more.

I plan at least 7 inches wide for bridges, since I also run narrow gauge stuff that could be even larger

Korm, for a small engine with small drivers, you are usually looking at narrow gauge locomotives. Stuff like what run on the Disney land’s tracks.

instead of edit:

look at these two.

the left is an amercanized Stainz, the right one is the 2-4-0 playmobil.

both got parts from cheap “bump and run” toys. with some detailing - pipes and so on, other tenders - i think, they’ll get near, what i want.

and, no, they are not weathered, they are just dusty.

So are you building NG equipment or SG equipment? I can get you some dimensions for NG equipment. Let me know.

Paul Austin

E Paul, I figured since he was asking about 1:32 and 1:29 he was going with standard gauge equipment.

Think what Korm is after is a rubber scale. A general idea of what a old west loco would dimension out in any gauge. While it might not be the easiest question to answer I get where he is going. For my micro, when I get going on it will be 1:24. Why because it is an architectural scale (read: easy to do the math) and it is very close to half way in between everything. I can run just about anything from small 1:20 to 1:32 bashed all to heck to make it look somewhat plausible. I wont be worried about narrow gauge or standard gauge or … I am just going to build whatever I want in whatever size I think looks good to me.

So Korm. . . I think David gave you a pretty good place to start. Make it somewhere around 4" wide. right in the middle of the two.

thanks to all.

together you gave me an aproximation to an answer, that i can use.

i think Devon expressed it well: in reality i’m looking for a rubber scale.

i got a huge collection of assessories. all between 1:32 and 1:28, (nearly 2000 figures, hundreds of animals, dozens of carts and houses…), those i want to use.

and i was thinking, to “shrink” my trains, that they fit in better.

if i compare David’s numbers to the measurements of my LGB (4.330" to 4.724" wide), Newqida (4" wide) and playmobil (3.740" wide) - i think, i’ll rubberize between 3.5 and 4".

(my tunnels and other clearences all are at least 6" wide)

so, off i go, trying again to make my new 3D printer work - cause i found a file for a nice looking 4-4-0 western loco on thingyverse. (marked as 1:32)

maybe i can replace its chassis with a stainz motor block.

I can’t wait

Korm, try ‘Scale Rule’ company on line. They make nice 24" plastic rules in all the proportions you could ask for and then some. I have a 1:20.3, a 1:22.5, and a 1:24 plus several others. Try that out.

Paul

Sorry to miss inform you all, but Scale Card Rules when out of business 3 years ago! A t! Now I would check out Whalters on line.
