Im in the process of painting some flat log cars from Hartland. I have the tops(boards) and the posts painted to look like old boards using a light tan color with a wash of black. I still have to paint the sides and ends but having trouble on what color. I am going for that old logging look but all photos I see are Black and White. I guess I want a natral look but something different than what the top boards are. What color would work. I like what color kevin did to his flats (not sure what you call it and what colors made this. (see the post by Cal: Climax, their is a picture of K’s flat car their with that nice faded color. Im just stumped on what color I should use.
You might want to start with a light gray and add just a touch of brown to give it a slightly “warmer” look. After the base color dries, go over it with thin washes of dark brown and/or black, until it comes out the way you want it.
Shawn said:The color of Kevins larger flat car , if I'm not mistaken, was an equivelant color of Krylon ruddy brown primer from Lowes, because he couldn't find Krylon there. The rest of the effects were made by lightly sanding and washes of acrylic paints. You could probably find an explaination with photos on MLS by searching the archives.

I just used Krylon red primer on mine. One’s a rusty metal primer that’s more brownish color and the other is a sandable primer that’s more reddish in color.
