Hi ALL!
I just got ahold of one of these Buddy L Heritage 2-6-2 Copper Boiler Loco’s. It generaly works, sound amd all. I know it has a Steam unit. I didn’t get any paper work with this thing. I know there is a switch for it, but I can’t find the stupid thing ! Any guesses ?
Many thanks, Ted
Under the smoke box door?
OK…I beginning to feel real stupid here !! (OK, it comes naturally ! ) . Were IS this smoke door ? I pulled the “cap” off the smoker, I can see this clear plastic smoke unit with 2 small holes, I’de guess one is the smoker, the other the filler. Nothing here looks like a switch !
It’s the round thing on the front of the boiler and under the smoke stack. Should have a latch and hinges. I’m just guessing as I don’t own a BuddyL, but most of B’mann stuff has the switches under that door.
There is no switch for the smoke on the Buddy L. It does not use “smoke fluid”.
It has a really pathetic smoke unit that, if it works at all, won’t work for long.
I don’t know if it is some kind of “ozone generator” or what, but it is electrical and fluidless.

Hi again and thanks.
I tried pulling on the boiler front door before, it doesn’t feel like it opens. I just tried it again, I can see “Hinges” , but they look fake. I really don’t want to break the front of this, it just doesn’t seem to want to came off easily as it should if it was intended too. This rally should be hard to find and do !!! Stupidity pursists, at least I wasn’t trying this yesterday, the 13 th !!
Thanks, Ted
The door doesn’t open. But the entire front will pop off rather easily. It’s not glued.

Do like I do. Take it to your next dental appointment and get it X-rayed.
In reference to Michael’s insightful "dental x-ray"contribution above:
Okay, I’ll bite: You have been successful with the dentist X ray gambit because you and your dentist are certainly great friends? Or he or she is an avid model train enthusiast? Or the novelty of X-raying a model train is tooooo much to leave alone? Or??? Please give us the full story.

I had one of those copper boiler Buddy L locos. The “dogs” (clamps) all around the smoke box door are molded on, EXCEPT for one, which acts as a latch. You can turn it to unlock the smoke box door, which can then swing open by pulling on the number plate.
BTW, the instructions that came with mine says it uses smoke fluid, though none was included. I bought some, used it, and found that it produced very little smoke and soon stopped working. The sound eventually stopped working too, shortly after I started building my permanent layout.
I had one only because I got it for $30. The other issue had with mine was traction. It had a hard time pulling 2-3 cars. You might have to add more weight to the engine. Mine sits in the parts bin now.
I just checked mine. Indeed the door opens. Mine was painted shut. But there’s nothing behind the door.
I guess they must have made a couple of versions. Mine did not use smoke fluid. The smoke worked longer than the sound
But it was feeble enough to only be visible indoors.

It’s a little less glamorous than it sounds. Actually, I had smacked my finger while installing an enclosure for a microwave oven. (Pre train days). Man, that hurt. I knew from prior self-inflicted injury that there was not much to be done for it. However, as luck would have it, I had a dental appointment.
I begged the technician/hygenist to take a pic. She did (okay, they are very friendly and do like me there). Then the dentist came in. “That’s not how you do it!” She then took a whole series of shots of the finger.
And yeah, it was smashed into three bits. Better now.
Love my dentist!
