Need Bachmann 2-Truck Shay documentation - Anyone?

I’m looking for the original documentation for a Fn3 Bachmann Spectrum 2 truck Shay. Specifically I’d like to find the exploded view / parts list and any disassembly instructions.

I picked up a 1st generation recently in a swap deal. Digging into it this evening it looks like my winter project will be a complete tear-down and refurb of this loco. So far, without any instructions I’ve managed to get the tender off and both trucks open from the bottom. I’d like to do a complete tear-down, but don’t know where to go next.

If anyone has the original paperwork and can scan it, I would love to get a copy. I’ve checked the Bachmann website and they have it on-line for almost all the LS Spectrum locos, except this one :frowning:

Found some of what I was looking for here: http://hyaklocoworks.weebly.com/bachmann-2t-shay.html and on George Shreyer’s site.

Jon,
I have the books but I also think I have all the VHS tapes on disc.
I will look tomorrow and let you know.
Rick

Thanks Rick. One secret I was looking for was how to remove the trucks. Found it on George’s site  Not sure now how far I’m going to tear it down. It needs a real good cleaning and conversion to R/C.

I’m interested in how you convert yours to R/C. I put airwire in mine. The biggest problem I found was fitting the battery in the loco. I really didnt want a battery car. My solution was convert my loco to an oil burner and put the battery in the “oil tank”

Funny Jake, I’m doing the exact same thing but for a sound system. Do you have pics?

New post?

I’ll end up doing a cut-and-toss of the factory electronics and using a LiIon battery. Looks like there are a number places to fit batteries. ESC, RX and sound should all fit in the tender. Batteries in the boiler perhaps. Might have to loose or modify the boiler weight.

John, don’t know if this will help or not midway down there are clickable links to wiring diagrams and such, this site has alot of information, let me know if this helps you or not. Regal

When I converted mine, I ripped out all of the factory stuff. I put the receiver and lithium-ion battery under the coal pile. No problem with room; never touched the weight in the boiler.

If it’s any help to anyone, here’s how I have mine set up: The receiver, throttle and speaker are in the tender;

The coal load was built up with hungry boards to cover the on/off switch:

One battery pack is above the rear truck, the sound board is under the cab and one battery pack is in the fire box:

Kinda of a pita to cram all the stuff hither and yon, but it works…

I saw one loco by a guy who had shoved a sound board under the cab canopy…

Ken, kinda dirty isn’t it?

Yup…and well used and abused…

Thanks for all the ideas. Anyone do the NWSL gears on one? Very weird; of 4 axles, only one has a drive gear, but there are no broken parts inside the gear box. I see how to take the wheels off, but the bearing seems to be pressed on.

I did put NWSL on mine Jon. As mine was DOA and all 4 gears were split. You take the screws out of the bootom of the truck. Without it in front of me, I think there were 6 screws. That removes the cover that keeps the wheels in place. Then I think you can just pull out the axle.

To get the wheel off I used a vise and a Plastic hammer (cant remember the name for them, they have a hard plastic end so you dont damage the metal your hitting). It came off pretty easy, then slide the new gear on and pounded it in place using the hammer and a deep socket. Then I pounded the wheel back on. Took all of 10 mins I think.

The gears from NWSL are not cheap, I think they were like 13.00 a piece and you need 4.

On another note, those of you who gutted the electronics, did you also take out the electronics out of the firebox. And if so, what did you do about the firebox flicker. I’d like to keep that if I can.

Mark V: I didnt make any pictures and right now I need to make the oil bunker to put the battery in. I know it will work because I have done the measurements but I have yet to make the oil bunker. That is a winter project.

I took mine out. I never saw it when I ran outside anyway.

Gutted tossed …Jon…email me if ya need someone to yalk ya through tering things apart and we can exchange numbers…Betting TOC is prolly the pnly one who has torn down more Shays than I have…

And my TOC converted 2 truck with RCS & internal batteries retains the factory provided flickering firebox. Looks great when operating in low light or at night!

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Thanks Bart. I’ll shoot you an email.
