I knew LS equipment was relatively expensive these days, but I never realized there was money in the boxes too. Ran across this listing on evil bay today. The price of the box will get your attention, but you better pay closer attention to the shipping. WOW and WOW.
How many are watching ?
Zero
I shipped a guy flattened LGB boxes about a month ago. He paid $75 for shipping for free boxes that I listed on the Facebook swap and shop site. He asked how much for the boxes. I said, whatever you want. Not a bad way to earn $25 bucks… So yah, doesn’t surprise me.
And here I thought my wife was crazy for storing empty boxes (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)We could have a fortune and not even realize it (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)
Yesterday at a train show I actually bought an empty box for $5. The lady selling them was surprised that people were interested in a few last year so she brought more this time.
I showed the guys that I had traveled with the box and they asked why an empty box and I said that the woman I bought it off assured me that there was genuine air in it from the LGB factory in Germany.
Actually I had bought the car a few weeks back and it didn’t come with a box so I figured if I ever decided to sell it is worth more with the box.
Imagine buying an empty box.
It does not surprise me having come from the scale model car world, both static and slot racer. Its amazing how much a model’s value can be affected at auction by whether it is boxed or not, never mind condition. Some of those boxes have a clearly defined “market value”. When I traded out most of my collection to cover the cost of this hobby I was always grateful for noting this a long long time ago and always kept it in mind.
The Germans were always so insistent of quoting in their listings “Alles original verpackt”. The Spanish were very keen on the expression, “Todos originales”. I always made sure to provide the Anglicized versions in my listings (if true) so that “Google” would translate properly. I’m British not German or Spanish. You gotta understand your target market’s needs, haven’t you ? (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
Edit - technical glitch, double post
It is really important to have the Manufacturers box for an engine if it has to be shipped for a sale or repair.
However a LGB box for $60 is a bit unreal top me.
I use boxes. Come Winter in Joisey, the trains get put away in their boxes, on the shelves.
Interesting - OK, not really something I understand at all. ALL of my boxes for anything are long gone. I guess I am poorer for it…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)
I suppose the shipping is high because it’s from the UK. But that hi? Sheesh!

I live about 5 miles from the vendors place and if it is who I think it is he is an “antique”/ secondhand toys dealer…
Doesn’t anybody watch The Antiques Roadshow? Original boxes have long been valued, but I made a choice to play with my trains and not worry about their value after I’ve cashed my chips. That said, I have the space, so I still have the boxes from my navy brat training; easier to pack every two to three years …
Old carpet is coming up and my wall of trains got packed because the book cases have to be moved, yep the boxes are still on their shelves, empty!
