One for sale on craigslist
I’d love a caboose. and this one is ONLY $25,000 to $35,000 as is WOW ! $165,000 when fixed up? Where are they getting their prices from?
Does it come with the trucks?
In 1974 I was lined up to purchase a caboose, delivered to the siding of my choice for $2000. Fell through when potential landlord said no.

Quite frankly I can’t tell if it is prototype or model. Looking at the undergrowth, I am thinking model.
I hope it’s in good shape 'cause if i buy it I’d be living in it.

I know of one in Aroostoook county maine. Probably cheap too but one h of a long way for most of you!
It is a pretty Bangor and Aroostook RR wooden one.
The Tennessee Central Railroad Museum in Nashville, TN. has a caboose for sale for the price of scrap.
As always, the real cost is in having them moved.

Sounds like another scam on Criglist. Sure a long way from east coast to be where it is said to be. Later RJD
Curiosity is a dangerous thing. It finally got the better of me and I am doing some additional research. It appears after some searching that the ‘L&S,M&S RR’ referenced in the ad could possibly be the ‘Lake Shore and Michigan Southen Railroad’ which ran from Buffalo, NY to Chicago, IL between 1839 and 1914, when it was absorbed into the New York Central RR. That may account for the color choices, although I wouldn’t bet on it.
The limited view surrounding the caboose in the photo could represent almost any north tier woodland setting, so determining an accurate location would be difficult at best. Judging by the growth surrounding the caboose access will be restricted at best and I would surmise that it is not ‘on the highway’. Depending on undergrowth density and distance to a suitable hard surface road, it may take a logging company to gain access. And if the ground itself is typical of the suggested surroundings, wheel loadings to move the caboose will need to be light. I would be interested in finding GPS coordinates for it so I could Google Earth it’s location.
For a wood sided caboose in the middle of no where, it looks to be in quite good condition, and well painted. I would guess that the trucks, brake rigging and any other railroad related metal part have been removed for scrap already, so suggested restoration costs will climb significantly. It would also have been a benefit to the seller to have added additional pics of the other side and interiro to assist in decision making.
I find it interesting that according to the ad, the caboose is located on the east coast, the ad is posted on the west coast and the phone number is a cell number with an Idaho area code. With only a cell phone for contact, I am not THAT interested in it’s where abouts. Considering dropping these thoughts on CraigsList and see what they think. I agree with RJD…it’s a scam…
Bob,
Now this clearly got your attention. I did a bit of research and the 208-610 area code and prefix while primarily mobile is identified with Sandpoint, ID. Now I live in Post Falls, Idaho which is about 50 miles south. The fact that it was posted in the Spokane/CDA craiglist does make sense as this is the largest metropolitan area near Sandpoint and would draw attention. The woods in the see are certainly indicative of the area around Sandpoint, but as you note it could be anywhere.
Since I am local to this I will shoot them a text and see what they say. Maybe I can lay eyes on it if it turns out to be real.
But I agree seems pretty sketchy

Craigslist post is gone…
Its back again with better pictures. I still received no reply to this advertisement.
What a piece of junk!!! There’s no way that thing is worth more then a couple thousand dollars and that’s only if it’s accessible so you could get it out of the forest.
That doesn’t look like the same caboose to me. And I have to wonder what is actually holding that pile of rotten wood together. And why the Technicolor nightmare of a paint job?
I wish they would have responded to me. If I wasn’t going out of town I would try again. And yes it is a piece of junk. I am wondering where this is stashed. And still no telling if the trucks are under it.
I got a response:
2miles from a 1st class highway or 1/2hr to a railhead, and no trucks.

Just be aware of making a meet with some unknown, to many folks been shot lately. Later RJD
I’m not going, just was curious.
I just did a quick search for cabooses for sale. Lots of links turned up. Here is one of them. http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/catalog.asp?catid=427&n=Cabooses Shouldn’t be hard to find one if you really wanted too.
