NdeM Caboose 42197

One of my favority cars has always been the caboose and I am always looking for interesting and unusual cabooses to built as a model. This caboose is an outside braced caboose with a lenght of 32’3. About six weeks ago I started to built a model of the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México caboose No. 42197. The model will be built from wood and will have a full interior. The cupola is from an EBT Bachmann caboose. I received many photos and a drawing of the caboose after a request on Mexlist forum. Below are a few photos of the caboose. The trucks will be changed to more prototypically ones. If you would like to see a photo of the prototype, just look here; http://np2526.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2673892 Regards Eric Holland / Switzerland

I like it!
Good job.
I’ll file that away for next winter’s activity in my shop.

VERY nice.

Thats a great looking caboose!

Sweet! Great project, and an interesting prototype. I especially like the tank (kerosene?) on the roof.

Looks good , Eric.
You never did post a finished picture of the 50 tonner
Ralph

Eric, Very nice. I love that style of caboose. Western Pacific had a number like that many of which were later converted to bay window. Their subsidiary, Sacramento Northern had a few as well.

Oops! A little larger than I’d intended. If it’s a problem for anybody tell me and I’ll remove it.

Very nice Eric! a very interesting caboose indeed. I’ll be adding this to my list of things to build someday!

I think that's the perfect size, Richard. Don't miss any details ;) Ralph

Hi Ralph

Thanks for your interest. I have not forgotten my 50 tonner. I will post the pictures of the finished model in a few months. This is just a new project I am working on. Most of the time I start with a new project when I am ready for about 80% with the old one. I will display both models in Oktober with several other of my SP freight cars at the Amercan railroad convention in Switzerland. http://www.trainmaster.ch/XCV-15-d.htm This is the largest exhibition of American model railroads outside the USA.

Regards
Eric

Very nice. I’m looking forward to seeing it as you progress.

I never realized I was getting hooked on cabooses until I realized one tack in the train barn was just cabooses!

Nice looking caboose!!!

The girls say that to him all the time.

Hi It has been some time ago, sice I wrote about my caboose. In the meantime I made working doors and completed the fronts. Here are some photos of my progress;

This is how I made the doors. I use an evergreen tupe and a brass rod. Simple, but it works and is garden railway proof. Next will be the roof. I would like to make a corrugated roof. Most box cars and cabooses of the narrow gauge railroads in Mexico had corrugated roofs in their later years. I bought a corrugated roof from Plastruct, scale 1:24, but I am not happy with it because, I think it is much to large. Does anyone have an idea were I could find better corrugated roofs for large scale? Regards Eric

Really nice!

Working on the garden layout has kept me away from my OB Caboose, you’e making me re-think my priorities!

Excellent…love the door!

Hi I added a roof of corrugated sheeting and added bars to the windows. These bars were added to these cabooses, because they were also used to transport valuables. I added also a tank on the roof, this was use for water supply. As you can see I have been also at the paintshop. I started also with the interior, but I do not have any plans of the interior. I saw some photos of a different NdeM caboose, so I will use this. If someone has a photo or a plan of the interior, I would be very thankful if he would send it to me. The original is still in existence at a railroad museum in Mexico. I did send a request to them, but unfortunately got no reply.
