Large Scale Central

NC Transportation Museum

Took a trip to Spencer Sunday.

I was happy to see they were running the N&W GP9. This loco never wore the red paint while in service. Built in 1958.

The “Back Shop” is still not open.

The $10 cab ride is the best $10 you’ll ever spend. They don’t go too far and they don’t move too fast. But where else are you going to ride in the cab for $10

I sat at the unused controls during the ride

A few pictures from the cab

Here we have one of Rooster’s beloved F-40’s.

Too many pictures for one post. I’ll put up a few more later. Ralph

Very nice. Looks like a good day. Thanks for sharing

Looks like you had a good day

Looks like the same guy driving the train…

It was  We had a good conversation. He doesn’t much like the GP-9. These are his two favorite engines. I’ve not ridden in either cab.

Here is my personal favorite.

I talked with the engineer about the Shay. He said repairs will cost $250,000. But you can see there has been very little done in almost two years. He also mentioned that the Shay’s daily operating cost is almost double the 604.

Now here is a photo of the 604. I think when the museum has operating steam again, it will be the 604.

Great pictures Ralph, to bad they’re leaving the F-40 outside to rust away. It looks like they have a pretty big collection of locomotives and rolling stock.

VERY NICE! Now I need too add more detail to my 40

They do have a good collection. Not enough room to store everything indoors. Operational engines are usualy parked in the roundhouse. They have a lot of motive power and rolling stock on display in the roundhouse. Some original, some restored. They’ll probably “rehab” the F-40. If it doesn’t run they’ll fix the rust and paint it. Use it for a static display outdoors. A new…to me…display. The switcher was in the roundhouse in the past.

There is also a large section of the roundhouse used as their shop.

Unusual to see this many stalls empty.

The first time I came to Spencer, you could walk just about anywhere you wanted. You can’t go back to this area anymore. The shed to the right is also used for storage.

I don’t know if these are newly aquired or if they pulled them out of the shed.

I didn’t take many steam photos this time around.

The “Spencer Car Shops” was a great unknown museum to me until a couple of years ago. Great place.

The loco you refered to as the 604 is actaully the 542 with 604 on it, they done it for Leatherheads because the 604 is in pieces but it’s tender is in one piece. They couldn’t have the 542 tender ready, so they put 604 on the 542 cab. They painted over 604 on one side this weekend. Also, they just got the back shop open a couple days ago(I went the 15th, and worked yesterday.)

Thanks for straightening that out. Is the 542 a cosmetic restore? And thank you for giving your time. I'm a bit far away to work. But I do try to visit yearly. Ralph

I was gonna say…that didn;t LOOK like the 604…(preferring to know her as BC&G 4 …)

Great pictures. Brings back some fond memories…

Yes, cosmetic restore only. Maybe, big maybe we will get it running one day way down the road.
