Large Scale Central

Narrow guage showed up on my Yahoo news page

Just got on to check my email, and this article of the Durango and Silverton #478 popped up doesn’t say much on it, but has some really good pictures of the loco being steamed up in the Durango yard, thought others might enjoy the pics as well http://www.theverge.com/2015/12/13/9907442/k28-steam-locomotive-1923-denver-and-rio-grande-western

Interesting. Its nice to see a grand old steam locomotive live and breathe again.

I put one of these on my Christmas list.

Devon, the K is a bit large for my operations. I would probably have to widen Resignation Bridge to fit the thing.

Oh David,

You misunderstood. I don’t want the 1:20.3 version. I want the 1:1 version(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

And about 50 miles of track to run it on. Make it a roundy round so I can just ride in circles all day.

GREAT photos ! I’ve ridden behind 478. . . always love to see pictures of her. Thanks for posting the link. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Wow, great pics!! Really enjoyed that.

Oh, um, yes, I misunderstood. I don’t dream that big. Well, actually I do, I just don’t say it out loud.

Nice choo-choo.

LOL I think after shoveling a couple tons of coal into the beast you might be rethinking that (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Great photos. That is a real beast compared to “my” full scale locomotive… Gotta win the lottery or something! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Nice bit of publicity and great shots. That’s a uniqe set up for the tricocks. Anybody know what the large steam cylinder that actuates the big bell crank over the lead truck is for? Thanks for posting.

Looks to me like that’s for raising and lowering the flanger.

Ray’s got it right on. 315 has its cylinder on top of the front deck. Most all of the flanger stuff was “added” by the RR after they got the engine, and not all models of the same engine always got them, seems to be a bit random as to which ones got them. On the D&S “Ks” there is also a little pointed red flag that raises and lowers to indicate to the crew whether or not the flanger is up or down. I can tell you that they ( the flanger mech.) don’t like to go thru switches or grade crossings.

Flangers usually don’t. I guess having a flanger on the locomotive, tells us that the railroad saw a lot of snow. As if we didnt already know that.

I like your thinking Devon, and one of the private coaches to pull behind it (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Very interesting. I wasn’t aware of the engines having a flanger.
