You said it yourself earlier–when you want something, you go looking for it. What better for an advertiser than to be able to tell who’s actively looking for something, and deliver it directly to them? Can you honestly tell me you wouldn’t have loved for an RCS ad to have shown up whenever someone Googled “Battery R/C”?

Later,

K

I go looking. BIG difference from having targeted ads looking you in the face.
Maybe it’s your media upbringing. Maybe you don’t see the difference.

FacePlant is a prime example.
Horrid pile of targeted ads.
FBPurity kills them off, 100%, full stop.

If I want something, I personally will go looking.
Anybody who spams me with ads (including Clambake overlays) is on the ignore list.

Like in the old days, Kevin. Pick up the Yaller Pages and go looking.
Marketing folks show up at the door, I open the door, point to my right…to the big sign that says “no soliciting”.
You buy a magazine, there are ads paid for of interest (never seen a vinyl siding ad in GR…), and nobody is targeting or tracking you.
Since I don’t subscribe to any magazine any more, full stop, I get free copies from folks who buy or get it…so nobody tracks my usage by magazine subscription.

Why do you think there is a National Do Not Call List (that typically doesn’t work)?
Because nobody wants to be bothered.
If I want to watch a show, I keep a book handy, and the remote with the “mute” button handy.

I could care less.

Hey Kevin, Just Googling “Battery R/C” is a bit too general to get anything trains specific.

However, make it “Battery R/C for Trains” and guess what website pops up at # 6 on the list?

The first website that has anything to do with Large Scale apart from Playmobil. …and soon for smaller scales as well.

Why shock horror, it is RCS - Remote Control Systems.

Do you know why that is so?
Judicious placement of specifically worded text on the home page of my website.

Tony, I’m glad you nailed it without giving a brass razoo to you know who.

Andrew

Yep, I don’t pay Google anything.

Although it is not down to me Andrew.
Rather it is the smarts of a very clever then 17 yo webmaster who is now the top accountancy student at the University of New England in Armidale.

It seems all that amateur “hacking” pays off in the end.

Heaven help the “smart” crooks when he becomes a Forensic Accountant.

So, absent large scale manufacturers to fill those slots, Google places ads for advertisers who are going after a specific demographic which large scalers tend to fit, or ads which match what Google has collected of your specific browsing habits.

And those of us who don’t “really need” ads use “adblock plus” to get rid of the nuisance. Absolutely amazing what it does to any site. The real impetus was the never ending trash that shows up on Facebook. Shwuuush… gone … history.

Welcome to the mob, Shad. Put your feet up and enjoy not being the guy who has to answer the gripes. You deserve a break.

It seems the banner ads have already started for 1st class members at MLS.
I think the honeymoon is already over. Didn’t take long.

Well, I see the gripes about banner ads, but not the banner ads themselves.

Me neither, “Adblock Plus” does a fine job, even for ordinary visitors.

It was my understanding that the 1st class membership fee removed the ads down the side of the window only.

The fee did not remove the small banner ads on the top of a page.

I wanted to peruse the site sponsors here the other day…AdBlock prevented that from happening—guess it goes both ways.

It doesn’t need to be that way though. An ad can be served up just as an image. The Ad blockers block code from pulling ads from ad farms like Google AdWords or perhaps the site itself.

I have no issues with direct sponsor ads especially if they are in the business of Large Scale trains.

You can allow it for LSC as you should!

Cale,

I use Adblock, but have allowed LSC ads to show.

That’s an option you have with Adblock Plus.

MLS pages now have 23 trackers to spy on your browsing pleasure.
Certain words that are posted by the user are turned into hyperlinks to sites such as Amazon etc.
I can see the 1st class membership payers dropping out in droves as there will no longer be any incentive to be one. A lack of revenue will not justify fixing the problems or upgrading the site.
All this in only a few days. Congratulations VS, you really are a bunch of mediocrity gurus. LOL

Andrew,

I just posted over there regarding the advertising banners. I don’t show anything running besides MLS. I haven’t used an Ad block program in years. But some longtime members over there ARE seeing these banners. What goes?

I think that some one has been sold a pup. I can just hear all those songs of praise coming back to haunt some that think VS has been good for MLS. I did not know that there were 23 largescale railroad related trackers, but OH, wait a minute, VS has nothing to do with model railways, it just makes money from it. I think the ‘last post’ tune should be trumpetted and the last one out turn the lights off please.

The increase in membership here on LSC will certainly be bait for the VS web to make an offer one cannot refuse.

It would seem from a previous posting that a certain ex-website owner wanted out of owning a forum so bad that he has apparently showed interest in acquiring a soon to be defunct site. On wonders at how true the rumour mill is and if true, exactly why was the plug pulled on the other site, maybe just maybe the smell of greenbacks. I wonder if any of the members got a share of the loot as it is the active members who really make a forum.

Nah. The VS guys, if you believe even half of what you read, insert non-compete clauses in the sales contracts. Some really nice guy who wants to defend his honour would be up against the wall with their legal folks should he do that.
Advertisement revenue is what drives VS websites.
I’m watching it.
There should come a point, and if the issues are linear, shouldn’t be long, where I will pull out.
The reading I have done so far on auto sites bought up by VS indicate a rapid stampede, with an implosion regarding new content or helpfulness.
They don’t mention cupcakes or roosters, fortunately.
