I was at our model train show yesterday running my climax ,with 5 logging cars&bobber.I decided to run the 2-6-0 give the climax a brake , well it made it around the loop twice and died sounds like it has striped the drive gear(as you can hear the motor sing) .what can i do to get it fixed or can i regear it to match the rearing of the climax as my line is not a high speed railway and it would be nice to be a bull to use it as a helper on my steep grade

I think you should first find the problem.

Often such things come by loose screws or cracked gearwheels.
Both things can be handeled.

But to have a complete regearing…this loco costs no 200 Euros!

So, find the problem first, then u can look if there is a chance to fix it. I think there is no need for a bigger repair if it can be done with a screw for some cents or a replacement wheel for a Euro or two.

Frank

k try it today it runs ,light but with even a car it make a zzzzzzzzzzzzz sound from around the front drivers

Dear Steve,

my father in law once gave me good advice:

One of our machines in business did make bad sounds from its spindle, and i feared a bad cause of destruction that will cost some thousands of Euros.
I went to him and cried: “what shall i do??? it´s broken! I dont dare to open it!!”

He smiled and said:
“when its definitly broken, what do you think you can make worse? But when its just a little thing and simple to repair, u´ll get a chance to spend much money!”

Not knowing nothing about spindles, i opened it and found out to repair it with a little adjustment.

Just take a screwdriver, open the loco and look for the problem. When u need help by a professional, he will be able to put it back together.
When not, it will run again.

When its unrepairable broken, u dont make it worse with open it!

Greeting

Frank

Steve you need to talk to Barry Olsen. He can tell you what to look for and what can be done. He post on here or look for his ad in Garden Railways Mag. BBT drives.

Steve,

Which 2-6-0 do you have the little industrial (formerly 2-4-2) or the 1890’s 2-6-0/4-4-0?

Two different animals.

Barry - BBT

The Yellow Pines 2-6-0 is the industrial mogul (Indy). You are probably right about the stripped gear. Crack open the drive train to confirm it. I don’t see any parts for it on the Bachmann site but give service a ring anyway. Maybe our buddy, Jack Lynch, can help.

this is the loco i got

Oops I was wrong. That’s the 1:20 Spectrum mogul.

Not many parts available - http://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66_69_145

was wrong, too.

I thought of the small 2-6-0.

Try this:
some Spectrum Locos (that is one) tend to loose screws at the bearing that holds the geared axle in place. As a result, the gearwheels slipp over with a sound. My Connie had that, too.

Would be easy to repair: just fix the unfixed gear-house on the bottom of the loco with a small screw (or with 2 or 3 of them…depending how many said “good bye” yet).

Frank

Don’t forget Loc-tite.

ok thx i’ll try that see what happenes

Steve,

The most vulnerable part is the gear on the axle. It is exactly the same gear that fails on the Connie. Not similar, interchangeably the same. So this is my best guess. And it can be repaired.

Remove the gear and axle from the gearbox and all of that Stephenson valving (remember/photograph how it was or came apart).

Slide the gear off of the axle. Notice the hub is the same on both sides of the gear. There is a K&S brass tube which fits nicely over the hub. Make two slices about 1/8" thick, clean up the burrs on the brass, trial fit the slices. Mix up a small batch of JB Weld (the 24 hour stuff). Put the epoxy in the trough on both sides of the gear, then press the brass slices into the epoxy. Smooth up the sides, notice the time and come back in 24 hours. Clean up any of the epoxy. Reassemble.

I’ve done two of these, one for a Connie and one for a Spectrum 2-6-0.

lol ok i’ll try the JB weld got some in the jeep
