My trip to Cass

The tank is #2’s orginal tank. The graffitti is actually a play of the light. The tank is having some body work done. It’s a mix of paint and bare metal in the light. Terry

Awesome pics, thanks for sharing them. The shots of the Climax restoration were especially interesting.

Congrats on your recent nuptials!

Very much on my “to do” list…soon I hope
Thanks for the photos to hold me over until then.

We can do a LSC class trip to Cass. We can all stay at Barts.

When we went about 5 years ago I had plans to stay in a campground that the railroad runs through. Problem was that I couldn’t find a road that I thought my little SUV could pull my trailer up the mountain with. There are lots of long curvy 9% grades no matter which way you approach. We ended up staying in Elkins and driving down to Cass twice.

I’d really like to get back there some day.

I get the recliner!!!

Here’s some more. I’ll lump all the equipment, logging and otherwise, together into this post.

This lil’ guy is right out front. Nice logging caboose.

These two grace the entrance to the park as well. The rotten flat car is an old log car and the box is some type of camp car.

The motor car. They were on fire watch and I think trash service at the whittaker stop. Being fire season the motor car is required to follow the trains.

The caboose at whittaker. The cabeese are available to rent and stay in overnight. Peering in the windows they are all in great shape. But, the missus said no.

the open car. it would be an amazing ride but those people were filthy when the ride was over. The new wife was pretty happy it was full.

the covered cars, you still get dirty. Not sure on the history. I asked if they were old logging cars but no one seemed to know.

I think that’s it. Again if I missed some I’ll edit.

Thanks for looking
Terry

Thanks for the memories

the caboose at Bald Knob is ex-Virginian Cab 311 after the Merger in '59 the N&W renumbered it to 530311 it changed hands a few times before heading to Cass and I am glad to see this piece of Virginian history well preserved and maintained, though it would be nice if all the cabs at Cass where painted and lettered in home railroad schemes.

Thank you for the wonderful pictures. Like several of the guys have posted I too spent three great days there in years past during one of their railfan weekends.

Congrats on your wedding too!!

Doc Tom

Jon,

I would think it would be a challenge to get the camper to Cass, let alone up on the line. Those are tight roads.

Ya know guys…a company house at Cass is like one flat rate and can sleep 10 or so folks…an LSC get together is a good idea!

I know about the docents at Cass too Terry…Gary Buchanan and I took the Shop tour a few years ago with the Park Superintendant leading it…I think Gary and I ended up running the tour by the time it was over…I got a really good shot of me in the cab of Big Six all steamed up…

Cass is what got me hooked on Shays…and railroading in genral…I have 8mm video of me about three years old clutching desperately to the tender of the Mt Emily Shay when she was there…I didn’t wanna go! I used to get there quite frequently…not as much as late…I would LOVE for us all to get together there…

I agree. Great idea.
I’d be in for sure, if it was a weekend. I could do a weekend and only burn 2 days vacation

Exactly. Fortunately I checked out the Google Topo maps before we made our plans and decided to pick Elkins as our our base of operations.

Jan and I stayed in one of the company houses a number of years ago. Great fun!

Good stuff Terry!

Yep, nice picture report of your visit. Lots of good info supplied for jumping off points if anyone cares to model some or all of the area.

GREAT STUFF ! . . . great photos. Thanks for sharing with us.
