I have always liked the idea of a switchback because they are neat and something that we do not often see on layouts so I had to have one. After much planning I finally put one in. My RR is track powered so I used a DPDT switch to handle the polarity issues. This can also be used for a train to reverse direction on the RR.
Here is a short video featuring it plus a bonus ride on angle through the switchback.

Thanks Ted. I would have liked to make it longer but I didn’t have the space.
So why haven’t you converted to the LGB turnout motors with their DPDT switches and a few reed switches/train-mounted magnets to automate this whole thing?
Looks like you’ve done all the hard work and this could make life so much easier.
That all sounds good but I run my RR using the KISS system. I do have 4 turnouts in the main yard that are powered and 2 more out of the way ones that I have set up cables to.
I don’t mind switching these by hand. This switchback is only for fun and to turn the occasional train so it doesn’t get much use.
