My Great Grandson Christmas train

My Great Grandson Jacob loves “PaPa’s” Trains. He’s two years old, and grandpa set out to build him a train that a 2year old could play with and not destroy. All wood from scrap.

There is a tender.

Two box cars he can put little things in.

Two Gondola cars for stuff.

Two Flats, that “Mater” like in “Tow Mater” will ride a lot on.

And his favorite of all train cars a Caboose.

While this string runs off to “Grandma’s Paint Shop” I’ll be trying to build an engine. It will be a 2 or 4 -4-0 to drive it with. I had better start roughing out a sketch. No Side rods, no piping and a really stout stack for carrying with.

Now that’s priceless

Nice work and very thoughtful.

WONDERFUL! There is no better gift than the sharing of the love of trains.

I think ‘Mater’ might be taking a back seat after Christmas.

Very nice.

When our son was a baby our daily commute was through Cajon Pass.

One of the first words he said was Wrong-a-boose.

We figured it out.

It was the caoose and it was on the “wrong end” of the train!

Rolling stock fresh out of GrandmaClaus’s paint shop. GrandpaClause got the wheels installed.

And the string.

Great Grandpa realized that he only had a couple of days to build an Engine… If Baldwin Could do it so could the “Grandpa Engine Works”. Spent way to late last night coming up with this.

Nothing is assembled yet, just fitted. A stack and coupler pin to finnish it off. Then on to grandma’s paint shop.

Nice job grandpa!

Beautiful work!

Lucky kid…

Love it. I have always been a hudge fan of wood toys. Better then the junk that you see on he shelves today.

Clearly, from somewhere or other, the boy has already acquired exquisite taste. Well done, Papa. Would you be my granddad too?

John, would you want me to send you a Choo Choo too?

Looks nice

I'd be happy just to get to play trains with you one fine day, Dave! :)

That looks great David, but I think you have a bent axle on the front pilot

Cool!

no! - very cool!

Finished in time for Christmas. Fresh out of Grandma Clauses Paint shop. Made a couple of changes during assembly. Changed the smoke box front to include a door, and the way I mounted the pilot wheels. Gave it three coats of clear lacquer. I’m happy with the way it turned out. I added a NMNRR Herald to the Tender.

Got the vinyl windows stuck on the Caboose, and added a New Mexico Northern RR Herald on the side ( just like Grand Pa’s) Lacquered the logo and windows for protection.
