Here is my friend Steve’s Regner shay build up. Steve got the last kit that Jay had in stock I believe. I have been working on it since. First pic shows it at the time of its first steam test. Second pics show the completed engine other than headlight and whistle kit that are on order. Runs good, but stiff. Getting better with each run. Will crawl pretty well now with only a little bit of jerkiness at the low end. I stained the engine with a mix of rubbing alcohol and 6 drops of india ink. Took about 4-6 coats of this to get it where Steve like the finish. Now he needs some proper 1:20.3 figures to crew it. I enjoyed building it up for him and cant wait for the Lumberjack kit to arrive for me to build for him. Mike
Looks good. I was thinking about getting the Willamette Shay but then went with the Lumberjack. Im hopping the Lumberjack arrives soon.
Should be soon Shawn, my friend Steve is also waiting on a Lumberjack. I know Jay said he had another one sold and on order when Steve ordered his. Jay was still hoping for them to arrive around the holidays. Steve wont have his till after the first of the year, fixed income and has to wait for next month’s check to pay for the engine. I may order a Max kit shortly. Unless my HO stuff down at the LHS brings in more than I am expecting it to. Then I might go for a Konrad. Lumberjack will be much more tollerant of rough track than the Willamette. The Regner trucks dont have enough rocking motion in them to deal with real rough track unfortunatly. Mike
I was thinking about the Konrad for my next but Im going to wait and see what they plan on doing for their next logging engine in feb. Of course I have to start saving-up again.
Seems there is just the one Willamette Shay kit left in the UK, but even so, at $1600+ I’m happy to let somebody else have it.

Nice model!
Does the engine have piston valves…or do the cylinders rock? What seems to work better on these smaller engines?
It’s a twin oscillator, but to tell the truth, it’s going at such a lick that you never notice. Same motor as ‘Challoner’ and ‘Lumberjack’ - very powerful little item, too. Last year at Welshpool we watched a ‘Lumberjack’ happily hauling 56 Binnie tipper cars around…

Nothing wrong with an “oscillator”…I’m also impressed with the clever bit of gearing between the crank and drive shaft!
Its too bad Regner stop producing the Shay and Willamette. I have the Lumberjack on order. cant wait to get it. I heard it was a strong engine.
Shawn - you obviously missed my post just TWO above yours - Lumberjack hauling 56 Binnie quarry tipper wagons at around a quarter pound each.
