Large Scale Central

My first scratchbuild

I have been dying to build something with scrap 1" foam board and scrap sheets of styrene or pvc ( thrown out from the sign business next to my shop). I really wanted to model the Washington St. station of the former Cumberland Valley RR located in my town(m-burg PA) now owned by NS. It’s a stick style structure and being that I spent the last 12 years rehabing a stick style home, it’s one of my favorite styles of Victorian architecture. I have lots of wookworking equipt. but not lots of time and foam just seemed to be the answer for me. I have about 15hrs into it. Would have been less but I cut all of my stick work/trim and windows/doors from a single sheet. It’s not finished yet and I need to pin stripe my 9 over 9 windows, cover the doors with vinyl and make a hardiplank sub base for weight and stability. Not to mention finish painting(you get a bit shaky after a couple beers) . However I thought I would post and walk the gauntlet. Please go easy on me as this is my first scratchbuild to scale (1/2 scale or 1:24). I was rather pleased with the results and cannot wait to finish it and stick it on the line this spring. This is what I modeled

Ok …Since Photobucket is dead and I’m not sure how to respond what was posted I just give a photo dump of the model back in the day in the hood when it was built but remember it still exists!

Dave,

Love those little flag stops. Looks like you are making a fine example.

Cool little building. Your model captures the shape very well. A little weathering to tone down the colors and I think you’ll have it nailed.

Are you going to do the pane detail in the all the windows, or leave some of them boarded up like the prototype?

Nice looking!

I wouldn’t bother weathering it. Just let it stay outside, it will get weathered enough.

You may want to weight it down or mount it to a heavy base…the wind has a habit of blowing away buildings like that. (That reminds me, I need to go move some of my buildings that last night’s wind relocated.)

I hope you add the brackets, thats one of the nicest aspects of the prototype.

Cute!

Yes, add the brackets.

Thanks guys! Yes I’m doing the window mullions out of pin striping(vinyl). The front main window is 12/12 and the rest are 9/9. I will be securing this structure to a piece of hardibacker(tile backer) I stated hardiplank originally, however that is a siding material. I love corbels (brackets) and ornamentation so I may also add running trim and possibly gable end brackets. The wind was pretty brutal here last night as well and I’m sure that structure would have been miles away if it was outside last night. As for boarding up the windows? I thought about that as well, that is why I made them pop in and out for servicing and if I want to add plywood I can just make up some vinyl panels and pop them in. perhaps with a little spray painted grafitti. I will post another picture when completely finished. Now I need a deck girder bridge, tunnel portals and a coal mine. I do have a question on building a coal mine(tipple). Do you guys just kinda eyeball something like that or are you going off of plans or getting actual measurements of the structure and scaling it down? Thanks again Dave Is this better?

I just kinda eye-balled the one I made. 3/4" PT plywood and scribed to look like boards on the outside. Most of them come in many different shapes and sizes to fit a location.

Very nice station stop. I wouldnt weather it either, let mother nature at it!

OK - OK - Don’t weather it. I just though the red was a bit bright, but that could be your camera to. I really like it with the corbels installed. Really finishes it.

Finally placed the station on the line for weathering and visual use. Boy do I have a mound of yard work to do!

Looks great! Add a bit of platforming there (Dirt, they wouldnt pour concrete for such a small stop), add a trash barrel, and a few other details. Looks great!

Nice one, Dave!

What’s the bit about “you get a bit shaky after a couple beers?” That’s the only way I’d have any hope of painting a straight line!

Since it was mentioned I suppose I should fix this thread.

“20 character minimum” accomplished!

Start from the top and re-read as suggested by the experts!

I :hearts: you guys and LSC has always ruled !

I for one thank you for fixing it and making it available again. I know I will be using it on my current build

That is a nice little RR building and you did a great job of replicating it for your RR.
I see you have a whacky cast of characters on your RR too :upside_down_face:
